Scientific Assistant (Agri.), Atomic Energy Agricultural Research Centre, Tando Jam (01-11-1984 to 31-11-1990).
RESEARCH WORK CARRIED OUT:
- Screening of aromatic and non-aromatic rice genotypesagainst rice stem borers as pest management strategy.
- Plant protection of the experimental/non-experimental crops, fruits etc. of NIA, Tandojam
- Advancement in the mass rearing of Chrysoperla carnea for the inundation in cotton, sugarcane and other crops.
- Feasibility of Biological control against rice stem borers
- Screening of check pea genotypes against the Helicoverpa armigera. (Coordinated programme with NIAB, NIFA)
- Screened aromatic and non-aromatic rice genotypesagainst rice stem borers as pest management strategy, and used light traps for monitoring rice stem borer’s population. Studies concluded that application of only nitrogen favoured the stem borers infestation, while; addition of phosphorus along with bio-fertilizer proved antagonistic and hence suppressed borers attack. Different insecticides and plant origin products were evaluated against borer’s infestation.
- Checked the susceptibility of chickpea genotypes to gram pod borer, at the farm conditions, examined the potential of neem, urea and neem+urea as ovipositional deterrents and larvicides against borers, use of synthetic insecticides and status of using botanical pesticides as alternative chemicals to insecticides as components of integrated pest management tool.
- Worked for the development of larval diet for the economical mass rearing of C. carnea
ACHIEVEMENTS:
- Among aromatic rice genotypes, Basmati Cr-34 & Jajai-15 A/97 was assessed as resistant and high yielding against rice stem borers as management strategy.
- Similarly, study on rice stem borers damage in non-aromatic rice genotypes demonstrated IR8 (P) & IR6-1-5-2 as most efficient for holding reduced pest infestation.
- Determined CH-31/99 and CM-24-2/02 chickpea genotypes as sources of resistance to their foremost insect pest constraint gram pod borer Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner), as the most sustainable approach to reduce pest losses.
- Assisted in the development of larval diet for predator Chrysoperla carnea.
