Internships, Events, Camps, and Classes

Program: Young Women Empowered (Y-WE)

What: This is a leadership and mentorship program. Learn public speaking & performance skills; meet amazing adult role models who will help you set and meet goals for the future; participate in creative writing, that will improve your written and verbal communication

Who: 13-18 year girls

Deadline: October 30, 2016

Where: 316 4th Ave. South, Kirkland, WA 98033

Cost: $25-$1500 (full scholarship is available)

Program: Sound Design Workshop

What: The event is for those interested in exploring career opportunities in music and sound design. Students take part in hands-on activities led by DigiPen’s veteran sound design faculty; experiment with DigiPen’s top-of-the-line sound design technology; learn about how professional sound designers create original music and audio for games and film; enjoy a complimentary snack and DigiPen T-shirt to take home.

When: Saturday, November 5, 2016; 9-1pm

Program: Free Museum Event: Exploration Expo

What: Learn from fantastic Flying Gizmos to radical robots to revolutionary rocketry and more. The Museum has a variety of innovative education program for explorers of all ages.

Program: Construction Career Day

What: Learn about Apprenticeship Programs, Operate crane and excavator simulators, haul truck rides and crane signaling demonstrations, operate equipment, work with concrete and rebar, learn about the different hand and power tools that are used in many different construction apprenticeships, and more! Lunch provided!

Where: Magnuson Park, Seattle,

When: October 6, 2016, 9-2pm.

Program: NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing

What: The NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computinghonors young women at the high-school level for their computing-related achievements and interests. Awardees are selected for their computing and IT aptitude, leadership ability, academic history, and plans for post-secondary education.The girls may earn scholarship for college, find computing internships, connect with a large network of other technical young women and discover resources to increase the knowledge of technology

Who: High school girls 9-12th grade

Deadline: November 7, 2016.

Program: Architecture, Construction, Engineering (ACE) Mentoring Program

What: A FREE mentor program for students interested in the fields of Architecture, Construction and Engineering.

Where: Students meet at Architecture & Engineering Firms in Seattle and the Eastside.

When: Students meet every-other-week throughout the school year culminating with final group project presentations in May.

Open to: All students’ grades 9 thru 12.

Deadline: October 16, 2016. Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Note: A signed parent consent form needs to be scanned or mailed to ACE Mentoring, for a student to be placed on a team.

ACE kick-off meeting is on Wednesday, October 26th, 6-7:30pm, at SHS PAC.

Program: Environmental Science & Tech. Practicum at Mercer Slough

What: Students gain hands-on research experience out in the field and our state-of-the-art wet lab; explore careers in environmental science and clean technology; engage with science professionals who act as mentors; earn a certificate of completion to enhance academic portfolios and college applications

Who: 9-12 grade students

Where: Mercer Slough EE Center 1625 118th Ave. S.E. Bellevue, WA 98005

When: Starts on November 4. 5 Saturdays; 10-4pm; (Fall session and Spring session available)

Program: Washington Aerospace Scholars

What: A FREE 2 part program designed for students interested in Engineering and Aerospace.

Where: Part 1 is a NASA designed on-line curriculum. Part 2 is a summer residency Session at the Museum of Flight, where students are mentored by professional engineers & scientists.

When: On-line assignments run from late December to May. Six day summer residency programs are run in June & July.

Open to: Current high school juniors that have a cumulative GPA of 3.0, are U.S. citizens, and are at least 16 years of age.

Deadline: November 4, 2016

Note: Students must successfully complete Part 1 of the program to be eligible for Part 2 (Summer Residency) portion. Student can earn college credits.

Program: Tech Prep classes

What: Students enrolled in Tech Prep classes and earned a “B” or higher grade, are encouraged to sign up online for college credits.

Cost: There is a $46 annual fee, regardless of how many college credits a student earns in one year. The tuition is waived for students on Free and Reduced Lunch. For more information, see Mrs. McDonald in room 201.
