·  VOCAB TEST 2—Monday 12/12. It’s cumulative but the new material will a little more heavily represented.

Monday 12/5:

·  Topic—The Atlantic Slave Trade

·  Reading—Ch. 20, p. 432-440 (stop at “African Societies…)

ALSO-REALLY look at the tables on p. 437; what can you learn from the numbers?

AND-Don’t skip the “In-Depth” on p. 438-9

Ø  This entire section is about the Atlantic slave trade. You need to understand as many aspects as you can.

Ø  MAJOR THEMES: migrations (in this case forced/coerced migration) and labor systems.

Ø  Some questions to consider--

§  Who was involved? When? Where did the slaves come from?

§  How did the European traders acquire slaves in Africa? Where were they taken? For what reason(s)?

§  What century saw the height of this trade?

§  What is the impact of the Atlantic slave trade on the Americas, on Europe? (tomorrow’s reading will address the impact on Africa)

Tuesday 12/6:

·  Topic—Sub-Saharan Africa c. 1450- c. 1750: Impact of the Slave Trade and Developments in South Africa

·  Reading—Ch. 20, p. 440-448 (start at “African Societies…” and stop at “The African Diaspora”)

Ø  How did the Atlantic slave trade impact Africa?

Ø  What were the characteristics of African kingdoms in general during this time period?

Ø  What specifics can you learn about the following kingdoms:

§  Kongo Benin Songhay

§  Dahomey Ashanti (Asante)

Ø  What can you learn about the Swahili Coast and the interior of Eastern Africa in this time period? (There’s not a great deal of info here, but you should pull out whatever you can!)

Ø  Theme: religion (and developments regarding Islam in Africa)

Ø  How were developments in South Africa different than in much of the rest of the continent?

Ø  Discuss Shaka and the Zulu rise to power.

Wednesday 12/7:

·  Topic—The African Diaspora

·  Reading—p. 448-454

Ø  What was the “Middle Passage”? What were the conditions like on the Middle Passage? See the doc on p. 450-1—DON’T SKIP IT!

Ø  How did the slave system in the Americas compare with other coercive labors systems utilized there?

Ø  How did the import of millions of Africans affect the Americas—culturally and socially?

Ø  Discuss the developments regarding the end of the Atlantic slave trade.

Thursday 12/8:

·  DBQ discussion

·  We’ll discuss general DBQ essay organization and the documents for tomorrow’s DBQ writing. None of this discussion will be as in depth as it was for the first DBQ. You have to start figuring it out for yourself!!

Friday 12/9:

·  In class DBQ writing. Make sure you bring plenty of paper and a blue or black pen!

·  You will only be able to have the actual DBQ with your annotations.
