Postgraduate Student Bursaries

Council offers a limited number of awards to helppostgraduate students to work on relevant microbiological research projects, either in their own, or another laboratory that has agreed to accept the student without charging bench fees. The bursaries provide support by awarding up to £1000 towards a student project, which may include field work, or up to £500 towards the costs of attending a relevant conference.Applications from or on behalf of named students are invited from IBBS members in higher education institutions and research institutes.Postgraduate students may apply directly if they are members of IBBS. The IBBS Council welcomes applications from all who meet the guidelines.

Guidelines

  1. Applicants must be members of the Society working in a higher education institution or research institute. Applications must be made on behalf of, or by, a named student.
  2. The award is provided to support work within a postgraduate research project that might not otherwise be possible.
  3. THE RESEARCH FUNDED MUST BE WITHIN THE AREA OFBIODETERIORATION OR BIODEGRADATION.
  4. Applications will be assessed by IBBS Council members. The scheme is competitive and applications will be judged on the following criteria (not in order of priority):
  5. feasibility of the researchin the time available
  6. necessity for the funding
  7. scientific merit and novelty
  8. suitability of the candidate
  1. Once an award has been offered, it cannot be transferred to another student.
  2. The awards will provide up to £1000 support towards the project or £500 towards conference costs.
  3. In addition to the bursary, successful students who are not already IBBs members will be offered one year’s free Student Membership of the Society to start at the beginning of the next calendar year.

It is a condition of the award that the student submits a brief report at the completion of the studentship or conference.In the case of a research project, students will be encouraged to present their work at an IBBS meeting and produce a brief report within four weeks of the end of the project being supported by the Bursary. Any scientific publication resulting from the work should acknowledge the IBBS.

  1. Applications for Bursaries will be taken by April 1st and October 1st of each year for projects beginning in the next academic year. The Council will let applicants know whether they have been successful by the 1st of April or October of that year. It is assumed that the part of the project being supported by the Bursary will take place in the following 18 months and that a report will be presented to IBBS at the end of that time for publication in the Newsletter. Where attendance at a conference is being supported, a report on the conference must be presented within one month of its conclusion. A copy of the certificate of attendance/presentation should also be sent.
  2. Enquiresshould be sent by email to nd completed applications must be made on the appropriate form and submitted by email tothe same address. The form must include the approval of the head of department/school, confirming that the applicant is registered as a student at the institution. In the case of work in another institution than the candidate’s, the head of that laboratory must also sign the appropriate section of the form.

Please attach a summary of the project, including background, objectives, brief description of methods and any results obtained so far (max. 3 pp). A few important references should be cited.

A budget sheet should also be attached, showing how it is intended to spend the money. Living

costs and bench fees will not be supported.Travel costs may be allowed if these are directly

related to the project.
