Re: ICOMIA Technical Guideline: Minimum Acceptable Finish and Appearance for Super Yacht Gloss Coatings
I enclose this technical guideline which has been developed by industry experts to provide a baseline for defining the minimum acceptable finish and appearance for super yacht gloss coatings. I am very grateful for their assistance. Readers of the latest edition of The Superyacht Report (ex The Yacht Report) will have seen a lengthy feature on this topic and the ICOMIA initiative was in general well supported. It is evident we are at a cross-roads where many in the industry are demanding the use of standards in the field of coatings. You will be aware that the ISO 11347 which sets out how coatings are to be measured is now at DIS stage and will be evaluated by industry over the coming months. The application of the ICOMIA Guideline requires the use of ISO(DIS) 11347 when assessing the final results.
I hope this guideline will stimulate yards and applicators to define the consistent finish they are able to achieve. I appreciate there will remain an element of subjectivity, but at least this is a step in a necessary direction. I also enclose an Excel Spreadsheet that allows a yard to show visually how their contract specification compares against the ICOMIA baseline and after completion, the result against the contract and the baseline. This might also stimulate yards into defining the corrective measures if results fall below the contract or indeed the ICOMIA baseline. I hope you find this helpful and I am grateful to Akzo Nobel for introducing us to this technique.
Yours sincerely
