Scholarship Application

Instructions

The Colorado Medical Society Education Foundation offers the opportunity for interested pre-matriculating medical students in Colorado to apply for a Foundation scholarship. As of 2017, Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine (RVUCOM) students are now able to compete for this scholarship, in addition to students from the University of Colorado School of Medicine. The scholarship is awarded to pre-matriculating medical students with financial need who demonstrate commitment to a future practice in either a medically underserved area and/or a rural community.

Scholarship amounts vary from year to year as does the number of awardees. Scholarships are one-time awards and are typically in the range of $4,000 per student. In some years, awards may be higher. The scholarship can only be used for tuition credit. Award checks will be made out to the school the student plans to attend, in the name of the awardee. Students selected for this scholarship will also be profiled in Colorado Medicine, the magazine published by the Colorado Medical Society.

Interested pre-matriculating students should submit a one-page (maximum length) letter of interest to be considered. There is no application form. The letter should make a compelling case for the student’s interest in practice in either a medically underserved and/or a rural community. Supporting evidence, such as a student’s background or experiences that have led to this interest, and other relevant information, should be included in the letter. Undergraduate grades and MCAT scores may be reviewed, as necessary.

All letters of application should be created and sent as a Word document. The Board of Directors of the Colorado Medical Society Education Foundation will consider all letters of application independently of the medical school applicants will be attending. Since all students will be considered anonymously by the Board of Directors, applicants should not mention terms like osteopathic, or allopathic, the degrees “DO” or “MD” or the phrase “osteopathic manipulative therapy”, etc. in their letters. Applicants should not specify which medical school to which they will be matriculating. RVUCOM reserves the right to either edit, or ask applicants to edit, letters that do not conform to the above requirements. The award decisions of the Colorado Medical Society Education Foundation Board of Directors are final and applicants should be notified of the results by early May, 2017.

RVUCOM students applying for this scholarship, should submit the application letter, as well as a very brief cover letter with the name of the student and contact information that will not be seen by the Board of Directors. Both of these documents may be emailed to Ms. Fran Lata, Executive Director of Student Financial Services at RVUCOM. Ms. Lata’s email address is . Deadline for receipt of the application and cover letters at RVUCOM is March 24, 2017.

Scholarship awardees are not guaranteed future admission to the Rural, Global or Research Tracks at RVUCOM. Questions may be directed to the Office of Student Financial Services at RVUCOM.
