To register, send a completed application form to Lori Glennon in the Office of the Superintendent. To obtain detailed information, please contact the person or persons listed within the opportunity of your choice. Please register early. Opportunities are open to all Webster educators. Participants must commit to attend the entire program of the selected opportunity.
Participation Requirements
Each opportunity will provide different configurations of professional development. Participants are required to attend all sessions, take part in all designed activities, and complete applications outside of class time that result in a demonstration of learning. Participants’ opportunity-related work should be included in their personal professional development plans and should be strongly linked to school
and district priorities.

Summary: This mini-course is designed to prepare mentors to assist beginning teachers in acclimating to the profession on the journey to becoming proficient, reflective practitioners. The preparation includes understanding the role and responsibilities of the mentor, insights into the needs and concerns of the beginning teacher, and skill development in supporting the professional growth of new colleagues.
Mentor teachers can draw on classroom experiences to share ideas, strategies and the “do’s and don’ts with new teachers while also imparting the cultural and professional norms of the school.
Classroom-based vignettes will be used to stimulate productive discussions about a broad range of classroom issues. These vignettes will present real dilemmas that encourage rich conversation about classroom occurrences, interventions to use in discussion and possible alternative solutions. Mentors will assist beginning teachers to gain confidence in creating effective learning environments by using positive principles of classroom management, building positive relationships with parents, and by engaging collaboratively in developing lessons that meet the needs of diverse learners.

Summary: This mini-course will provide a follow up to deepen understanding of how to apply Thinking Maps (TMs) in all aspects of content area reading and writing. Teachers will work collaboratively to share current concerns and successes with specific map applications, to identify the cognitive skills in graphic organizers specific to instructional programs in order to bridge/replace them w/TMs. They will learn to apply TMs to strategies for academic vocabulary development and word study. The follow-up focus will also include using TMs as organizational patterns for taking notes more effectively in fictional and expository text. They will explore examples of how to apply the maps to visualize the following reading comprehension skills: analyzing text features, identifying author’s purpose, previewing text, predicting, inferencing, distinguishing between fact and opinion, and summarizing. Teachers will learn how to enhance the writing process by using the maps for prewriting, editing, and planning and writing a research paper. Time will be provided for teachers to work collaboratively to adapt and develop TMs in their own content areas so that students can “hit the ground running” in September.

Institute Summary: This task force is will be charged with reviewing and revising the existing Technology Curriculum of the Webster Public Schools. The school system will publish a revised Technology Curriculum consistent with the Massachusetts Technology Literacy Standards and Expectations. The Technology Curriculum needs to be in electronic and hard copy format. It should consist of a curriculum guide and map consistent w/the maps developed in other content areas. The technology curriculum needs to reflect opportunities to embed technology skills into existing courses and needs to outline any stand-alone curriculum that would provide students with twenty-first century competencies, skills, and habits of mind. The Curriculum will be implemented in 2012 and assessed in 2013.

Study Group Summary: This study group will focus on reviewing the current grading policy in regard to reducing the failure rate in the major subject areas for students at BHS. The evaluation of current policy and procedures will determine what is/is not working and what needs to be changed in order to meet the goal. A diagnostic report including problem identification and revision recommendations will be presented to the Superintendent. The project group will examine revision compatibility w/ grade book and powerschool, and determine the effects on GPA and class rank. The study group will also identify future professional development staff needs in the areas of formative and summative assessment.
The study group will meet for 4 half days from 8AM-12pm. Each teacher and guidance counselor will receive the $25 per hour district-approved stipend upon completion and submission of the final report

Institute/Academy Summary: These projects are teacher-initiated by department in alignment with school and district goals. The Department Chair needs to draft a proposal using the accepted guidelines, submit the proposal to Mike Hackenson by Friday, June 10, 2011.The district has been working on a curriculum mapping project with multiple recommendations for a continuation of summer work both among and between grade levels. Since grade levels are at different places in the mapping project ranging from diary mapping and consensus mapping, this provides an opportunity to move forward at all stages of the process.
Each project group will meet for 4, 4- hr. days after end of the school year. Each participant will receive the $25/hr. District-approved stipend upon completion and submission of the final project.

Summary: This course provides training and initial guidance to Massachusetts’ mainstream teachers who have English language learners (ELLs) in their classrooms. Category 1 is designed to provide the theoretical and practical foundation in the stages of second language acquisition for English Language Learners who are developing English proficiency. It also explores the interrelationship of language and culture and its impact on teaching and learning. This course meets Category 1, Introduction to Second Language Teaching and Learning Professional Development Requirements as outlined in the Massachusetts Education Commissioner’s Memo of June 15, 2004.

Institute/Academy Summary: This course is designed to provide mainstream classroom teachers with the theoretical and practical knowledge base necessary to provide reading and writing instruction in sheltered content classrooms at the elementary level. Participants will be given the opportunity to analyze the literary demands facing the English language learners in their classrooms and to develop approaches to assist their students meet these demands. The focus of the course will be on research-based reading instruction and second language acquisition theory with emphasis on areas of particular need for English language learners. It will provide the participants with the required knowledge base and skills outlined in Category 4B, Reading and Writing in Sheltered Content Classrooms, in the updated Guidelines on Qualifications for Teachers in Sheltered English Immersion Classrooms from the Massachusetts Commissioner on Education, dated June 15, 2004.
