Unit 1- Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology

Essential Question: How are Anatomy and Physiology related?

  • Students will define anatomy and physiology.
  • Students will compare and contrast anatomy and physiology.

Essential Question: How is the body organized into parts?

  • Students will name the levels of structural organization that make up the human body, and explain how they are related.
  • Students will name the organ systems of the body, and briefly state the major functions of each.
  • Students will identify organs on a diagram.

Unit 2- Cells versus Tissues

Essential Question: What is the anatomy and physiology of a generalized cell?

  • Students will be able to define cell parts and organelles.
  • Students will be able to identify the regions and organelles of a cell.
  • Students will differentiate the ways material can be moved into and out of a cell
  • Students will describe the structure of the plasma membrane
  • Students will describe the process of DNA replication and mitosis.
  • Students will identify cell types and special functions

Essential Question: What are body tissues?

  • Students will identify the major tissue types and differentiate their structure and function.
  • Students will give the locations of the various tissue types.
  • Students will describe the process of wound healing.

Unit 3- Integumentary System

Essential Question: How are the body membranes classified?

  • Students will list the general functions of each membrane type and give it’s location.
  • Students will compare the structure of the major membrane types.

Essential Question: What is the role of the Integumentary system?

  • Students will list several important functions of the integumentary system.
  • Students will be able to identify various skin structures.
  • Students will name the layers of the skin.
  • Students will describe how skin color is determined.
  • Students will differentiate between first, second and third degree burns.
  • Students will characterize the different types of skin cancer.

Unit 4 – Skeletal System

Essential Question: What is the function of bones?

  • Students will list three functions of the skeletal system.
  • Students will name the four main classifications of bones.
  • Students will describe the composition of bone.

Essential Question: What are the bones of the axial and appendicular skeletal system?

  • Students will identify the bones that make up the skull, face and vertebrae.
  • Students will identify the bones that make up the shoulder, pelvic girdle, and attached limbs.
  • Students will identify the types of joints.

Unit 5 –Muscular System

Essential Question: What is the role of the muscular system?

  • Students will define muscular system
  • Students will describe similarities and differences in the structure and function of the three types of muscle tissue.

Essential Question: what is the anatomy (microscopic and gross) of skeletal muscle tissue?

  • Students will describe the microscopic structure of skeletal muscle.
  • Students will explain the role of actin- and myosin- containing myofilaments.
  • Students will demonstrate or identify the different types of body movements.
  • Students will name and locate the major muscles of the human body.
  • Students will state the action of each major skeletal muscle.

Unit 6 - Nervous System

Essential Question: What is the general organization of the nervous system?

  • Students will list the general functions of the nervous system.
  • Students will define and list the major parts of the central and peripheral nervous system.

Essential Question: What is the structure and function of nervous tissue?

  • Students will state the function of neurons and neuralgia.
  • Students will describe the general structure of a neuron.
  • Students will classify neurons according to structure and function.

Essential Question: What is the role of the central nervous system?

  • Students will identify the parts of the brain as well list their function.
  • Students will describe and differentiate between different types of brain disorders.
  • Students will analyze an EEG.
  • Students will describe the role of the spinal cord.

Essential Question: what is the structure and function of the peripheral nervous system?

  • Students will describe the general structure of a nerve.
  • Students will identify the cranial nerves by number and list the major functions of each.
  • Students will explain the function of the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions of the autonomic nervous system.
