PROPOSAL FOR REVISED PROGRAMS AND NEW PROGRAMS
Use this form to submit proposals for revised majors, minors, concentrations, options, etc.
Note: A department, with its dean’s approval, may change up to two courses per year within an existing major, minor, concentration, option, etc., per year without seeking review of A2C2 and/or graduate Council, provided that (1) the total credits do not increase or decrease for the major, minor, concentration, option, etc., and (2) the change does not affect other departments or the University Studies Program. A2C2 and/or Graduate Council do, however, wish to be informed of these changes. Use form Notifications.
If a department wishes to make more extensive revisions to an existing major, minor, concentration, option, etc., complete and submit this form with the appropriate number of copies. The Mass Communication Department is submitting a proposal to change the course numbers for four of its offerings.
The purpose of this change is to assist students in better understanding the normal sequencing of courses and level of content.
It is proposed that:
MCOM110 Visual Communication be changed to MCOM210 Visual Communication
MCOM130 News Writing be changed to MCOM232 News Writing
MCOM230 News Gathering be changed to MCOM330 News Gathering
MCOM330 Feature Writing be changed to MCOM334 Feature Writing
Students, particularly freshmen students, have long been confused by the 100-level designations and have expressed concern when they are not able to enroll in those classes. Freshmen routinely only take MCOM100, Media and Society, in their first year. It is normal for students to take Visual Communication and News Writing during their second year at the university.
Changing to 200-level numbers should help in this regard.
News Gathering is a course routinely taken by students during their junior year. Renumbering this will more clearly indicate that and reflect sequencing of that course after News Writing is taken. News Writing is a prerequisite for News Gathering.
Feature Writing is a course taken after News Gathering, a prerequisite, and renumbering that course should help students identify that fact as well.
The department has also approved three other course changes as proposed here:
MCOM175 Mass Comm Computer Applications to become an elective in the Broadcasting Option
This change reflects the growing need for an understanding of Photoshop, Illustrator and In-Design in the Broadcasting—TV field.
MCOM226 Video Planning and Design to become a prerequisite for MCOM320 TV Operations
MCOM320 TV Operations to become a prerequisite for MCOM425, Senior Seminar
Again, these two changes relate to the correct sequencing of courses. Content of the requested prerequisites—MCOM226 and 320--is necessary to be prepared for the next courses in the sequence MCOM320 and MCOM425, respectively.
Changes to catalog resulting from these proposals are indicate by larger, bold type:
110 - Visual Communication-3 S.H.
Basic visual communication theory and basic b&w photography including camera handling and darkroom experience. Weekly critiques. Lab required. Manual 35mm camera required. This would become MCOM 210. The catalog description would remain the same.
130 - News Writing-3 S.H.
Style and structure of news stories; news sources; newsroom practices and procedures; with reporting assignments for publication and broadcast. Prerequisite: ENG 111.
175 - Mass Communication Computer Applications-3 S.H. This would become MCOM 232. The catalog description would remain the same.
230 - News Gathering-3 S.H.
Interviewing, observation and research as information-gathering methodologies; with reporting assignments for publication and broadcast. Prerequisite: MCOM 130. This would become MCOM 330 and indicated prerequisite would become MCOM232
320 - Television Operations-3 S.H.
Theory and practical experience in planning and creating television programs. MCOM 226 would become the prerequisite indicated in the catalog.
330 - Feature Writing-3 S.H.
Developing, writing and marketing feature stories to a variety of media. Prerequisite: MCOM 230. MCOM 334 would become the new number. The indicated prerequisite would become MCOM 330.
425 - Senior Seminar in Electronic Media-3 S.H.
Capstone experience in electronic media. Students research, plan and write a major research paper or produce a radio, television/video or multimedia program. Students also create a resume/portfolio. Prerequisites: Senior standing, MCOM 225 and MCOM 226. MCOM 320 would be added as a prerequisite for this course.
Following is the catalog description of program requirements in the five Mass Comm options. Proposed changes are indicated by larger, bold, underlined type.
