Synopsis: Estimates suggest that up to 10 million people in this country have a combination of at least one co-occurring mental health and substance-related disorder in any given year. Individuals suffering from multiple disorders are a varied group with multiple medical and social problems and are at increased risk for incarceration and homelessness. This training will take a “wide lens” view of the issue, examining both the historical barriers for effective treatment and community management while highlighting state-of-the art research which is suggestive of more effective interventions.
Objectives: Participants will be able to
Ø Identify the most common mental health disorders associated with co-occurring disorders
Ø Define key terms and classification systems used in the treatment field
Ø Explain specific research-supported techniques for treating clients with co-occurring disorders
Ø Define the guidelines for the development of a successful therapeutic relationship with individuals who have co-occurring disorders
Ø List service delivery issues that include client access, assessment, treatment, and comprehensive services
Ø Discuss the concept of a Therapeutic Jurisprudence approach with individuals involved with the criminal justice system
Ø Identify key principles about recovery self-help programs and other available resources
