Job Description
Position Title: Development and Outreach SpecialistGrade: 8

Communication and Resource Development
Reports to: Communications & Development Coordinator EEO Class: 2 (Professional)
Position Summary: The Development and Outreach Specialist’s primary duties are increasing public engagement through outreach and volunteer management and raising unrestricted private funds/resources through annual fund activities (i.e. appeals, events, etc.), in-kind solicitations, special events planning and implementation as well as private grants tracking for the agency.
Principle Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop and expand the annual giving program within SNAP by emphasizing the acquisition of new prospects and donors to SNAP and renewal of past donors. Recommends annual giving goal and coordinates activities to reach it.
- As a member of the Communication and Fundraising Team, participate in the development of a comprehensive communication and fundraising strategy aimed at creating awareness, and resources in support of the fulfillment of SNAP’s mission.
- Coordinate and attend outreach activities on behalf of SNAP.
- Assist in the solicitation of major corporate and foundation prospects with appropriate SNAP team members as assigned.
- Responsible for the planning, organizing and implementation of fundraising events, in conjunction with the Communications and Fundraising Team.
- Solicits in-kind gifts and services for Agency and event needs, such as equipment and supplies, prizes, auction items, and volunteer food services.
- Coordination of grant activity across the agency, tracking information such as what was applied for, outcomes, internal budgets related to grants, etc.
- Maintain the donor database ensuring timely and accurate data entry with support of appropriate SNAP staff.
- Coordination of volunteer activities for SNAP (also working with the VISTA, Living Green, and Ombudsman programs) including recruitment, training, orientation, tracking of time, placement, management, and advancement of the volunteer program. Coordinate volunteer events like the volunteer recognition/appreciation event and requests from outside groups for volunteer days (i.e. United Way Day of Caring, WRE, church groups).
- Coordinate timely acknowledgements for annual giving donors, special events donors and as assigned.
- Work with coworkers and volunteers to promote a positive, respectful and productive working environment, while protecting client confidentiality and dignity.
- Within the context of the stated principle job duties, serve as ambassador and positive representative of SNAP’s mission and values.
- Completes assigned projects and performs related duties as needed or situation dictates.
- Provides excellent customer service at all times as well as helps to grow the customer service culture within the agency.
Requirements:
Education and Experience
- Required: Associates Degree in Business or Communications and a minimum of three years of experience in fundraising with a non-profit or higher education institution.
- Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree in Business or Communications and three years of experience in fundraising with a non-profit.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to work independently, using initiative and judgment to resolve problems and meet fundraising goals.
- Ability to work as a supportive and collaborative member of the fundraising and communications team understanding each positions’ duties and interdependence in the achievement of a comprehensive communication and fundraising strategy.
- Ability to be self directed and work independently towards established goals.
- Excellent verbal, written and multi-media communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to organize and implement major events.
- High degree of comfort and ability to cultivate and solicit donor prospects.
- Knowledge of or capacity to learn charitable giving and related laws and regulations.
- Ability to establish strong working relationships with donors, colleagues, Board members, SNAP leadership, government officials, volunteers, and community contacts.
- Proficient in computer operations, including word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
- Ability to empathize with and advocate for low-income and vulnerable people, and to maintain confidentiality with personal information.
Training and Certifications
- Valid driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, insurance, and personal vehicle for Agency business (mileage reimbursed)
Work Environment/Physical Activities:
Work is generally performed in an office setting, though will require local travel. Scheduling flexibility is required to accommodate evening, weekend, and unanticipated public relations needs. High degree of activity (e.g., errands, set-up, etc.) required around events.
