STUDENT TRANSIT PASS PILOT South 2016-2017

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the Student Transit Pass Pilot?

The Student Transit Pass Pilot is a three-year pilot program sponsored by the Alameda County Transportation Commission (Alameda CTC) and funded by Measure BB, a countywide sales tax measure. The Pilot’s purpose is to make it easier to travel to and from school and school-related programs, jobs, and other activities, expanding transportation options for Alameda County’s middle and high school students. The three-year Pilot is expected to run from August 2016 through July 2019, with the hope of creating a basis for a countywide student transit pass program (funding permitting).

James Logan High School is one of eleven schools in Alameda County that will participate in this program during the 2016-2017 pilot year. If you are a full-time 9th or 10th grade student enrolled at James Logan High for the 2016-2017 school year, you are eligible to purchase a Student Transit Pass as part of this pilot program.

What is the Student Transit Pass?

There are two types of Student Transit Pass available for purchase:

· A Clipper Card that provides unlimited access to AC Transit bus services, valid for six months at a time (August 24-January 31 and February 1-July 31); and

· A sticker placed on your student ID card that provides unlimited access to Union City Transit bus services, valid for three months at a time (August 24-October 31, November 1-January 31, February 1-April 30, and May 1-July 31).

You can purchase either or both types of Passes.

How much does the Student Transit Pass cost?

The 6-month AC Transit Student Pass costs $60, and the 3-month Union City Transit Student Pass costs $54, approximately a 50% discount off the monthly youth pass currently offered by AC Transit and Union City Transit. Payment is accepted by cash or check. Please note, since the first pass period started on August 24th, the cost of the AC Transit Student Pass has been reduced to $50 (for the first period ending January 31st), and the Union City Transit Pass to $40 (for the first period ending October 31st).

How do I get a Student Transit Pass?

To purchase either pass, you need to fill out a registration/waiver form completely, sign it (and have your parent or legal guardian sign it if you’re under 18 years old), and return it to Ms. Martin, who is located in the Main Office building. You can hand it in any time during the school year. We strongly recommend handing it in as soon as possible so you can start using your Student Transit Pass right away!

For an AC Transit Student Pass: If you purchase an AC Transit Student Pass before September 2nd, you will receive a temporary AC Transit pass to use while we personalize your Clipper Card so you can start using AC Transit immediately. You will have to pick up your personalized Clipper card from Ms. Martin in mid-September!

If you purchase an AC Transit Student Pass after September 2nd, you might have to wait approximately two weeks before picking up your card. Temporary passes will not be issued. Still, don’t forget to check in with Ms. Martin to pick up your Clipper Card when it is ready!

For a Union City Transit Student Pass: You can purchase a Union City Transit Pass at Ms. Martin’s office. She will confirm that you’ve handed in your registration/waiver form, place the Pass sticker on your student ID, and record the Pass sticker number that has been assigned to you. If you want to purchase a pass for the other three-month periods, you can pay and collect those passes within one week prior to the beginning of those periods (November 1, February 1, and May 1).

I already have a Clipper Card. Can I combine my Clipper Cards?

No. You should keep your other Clipper Card and Student Transit Pass Clipper Card separate. Do not add any e-cash or other transit passes to this Student Transit Pass Clipper Card. If you lose your Student Transit Pass Clipper Card, we may not be able to replace any other passes or money you add to it.

How do I use my Student Transit Pass?

For an AC Transit Student Pass: As soon as you board an AC Transit bus, touch your Student Transit Pass Clipper Card to the card reader near the door. If the driver or anyone else who works for AC Transit asks, you must show your Clipper Card and student ID card. If it’s the first time you’re using the Pass and it isn’t showing up on the card reader, you might have to tap the Clipper Card a few times.

For a Union City Transit Student Pass: As soon as you board a Union City Transit bus, show your student ID card with the Pass sticker to the bus driver. If a driver or anyone else who works for Union City Transit asks, you must show your student ID card with the Pass sticker.

If you have any questions about boarding a bus, or how to signal for a stop, just ask the bus driver!

Can I lend someone my Student Transit Pass?

No. Your Student Transit Pass has been specially assigned to you, and is for your use alone. If your Pass is found being used by someone else, and has not been reported as lost or stolen, you may lose the privilege to participate in this program and may not be allowed to receive a replacement Student Transit Pass.

My Student Transit Pass was lost/stolen/broken/fell off! How do I get a new one?

For an AC Transit Student Pass: As soon as possible, call Clipper at 877-878-8883 and someone will help you cancel your missing Pass and order a new one. To make sure you replace the Student Transit Pass you’ve already purchased, have your student ID number ready and tell them you are participating in “Pilot Program South.” During this process, you will have to pay a $5 replacement fee by credit card or money order, so have that information on hand as well.

The replacement Pass will be sent to Ms. Martin, so remember to stop by his office a week after ordering the replacement to pick up your new Pass. You’ll need to show your student ID to pick it up. He can help answer other questions about the replacement process too.

For a Union City Transit Student Pass: If you’ve lost your student ID with the Pass sticker on it, you need to follow the James Logan High ID replacement process, and then show your new ID card to Ms. Martin to receive a new Pass sticker at no cost. If you lose your student ID card with a Pass sticker on it a second time, you will have to pay a $5 Pass sticker replacement fee in addition to the cost of a new student ID.

If you’ve lost the Pass sticker, but still have the ID, you will have to pay a $5 Pass sticker replacement fee to receive a replacement Pass.

If there is some other problem with the Pass sticker (e.g., it falls off or becomes unreadable) and you still have the sticker with you, there is no cost to replace the Pass sticker. If this happens a second time, you will have to pay a $5 Pass sticker replacement fee.

Take care of your Pass. If you request a replacement Pass more than three times, your eligibility to participate in the program could be revoked or you may be required to pay the full cost of the Pass.

What if I have an issue with my pass on the weekend or during school vacation?

You can email anytime.

Is there anything else I have to do to participate?
