Task Description:

Students conduct an investigation in pairs to find out about friction as a force that slows moving objects. They are required to:

  • design an experiment using the material they had been provided with (four surfaces, metre rulers, marbles and a 30 cm ruler to use as a runway for the marble)
  • predict the outcomes of the experiment
  • conduct the experiment and record the observations
  • communicate the method, results and conclusion in a report (individually)

Procedure:

  • design an experiment using the material they had been provided with (four surfaces, metre rulers, marbles and a 30 cm ruler to use as a runway for the marble)
  • predict the outcomes of the experiment
  • conduct the experiment and record the observations
  • individuallycommunicate the method, results and conclusion in a report (students may communicate the method, results and conclusion digitally e.g. flipcam, storyboard).

Resources:

  • Four surfaces
  • Metre rulers
  • Marbles
  • 30 cm ruler to use as a runway for the marble
