Destiny Disrupted

Note Taking Assignment:

Summer Reading, 2017

Introduction: This summer you will be reading nearly half of Tamim Ansary’s Destiny Disrupted: A History of the World through Islamic Eyes, Chapters 1-13 (complete Chapter 13 and halt before Chapter 14). You will notice immediately that much of the content is review from AP World (9), which is no mistake. The summer material will give you a new look at older content while hopefully enriching your knowledge of the Middle World.

Your task with this book is simple: Take Cornell Notes on your reading and code your notes using the SPICE acronym (S: Social Issues; P: Political Issues; I: Interaction between Humans and the Environment; C: Cultural Issues; E: Economic Issues). The coding process is quite simple. All you need to do is procure five highlighters of different colors or five colored pencils of different colors. Looking at the content of your notes, highlight or underline the content that relates to the various themes. Not all your content will be coded! Some content can be coded in multiple ways (what is a social issue to some may be a cultural issues, for example)! There is no right or wrong way to approach this activity at this stage. The first chapter has been completed for you to exemplify the process.

A final note on the format… The cue column (the column to the far left) is best filled with subheadings of the chapter. The summary section of your Cornell notes should be simply a two to four sentence summary of the entire chapter at the conclusion of each chapter’s notes.

For the entire reading assignment, you should produce no less than 20 pages of notes (that would be 20 single sided pages) and no more than 40 pages of notes.
