Describing a painting: Terrace at Sainte-Adresse, by Claude Monet.

“Terrace at Sainte-Adresse” was painted by Claude Monet in 1867. It is now exhibited at the Met (the Metropolitan Museum) in New York City. The canvas is quite big (98 x (=by) 130 cm (centimetres)).

Monet was a famous French painter born in 1840 and who died in 1926. He painted this painting (while staying) at the seaside in Normandy, so it is a seascape, which is divided into three horizontal sections.

In the foregroundwe can see a few people sitting or standing on a terrace. They are looking at the sea. The bottom left-hand corner of the composition is in the shade whereasthe right-hand corner is very sunny. It must be spring or summer, as there are a lot of colourful flowers. The weather seems to be quite breezy because the two flags are fluttering in the wind. Yetwe can imagine that it is quite warm and sunny since both women are wearing light-coloured dresses and carrying sunshades and/while one of the men has got a straw hat on.

In the middle ground a small boat is sailing on the (rippling) sea andin the background there are a lot of sailing boats and steamboats. The sea is a darker blue than the sky and the smoke coming out of the steamboats melts into the clouds.

When he painted this painting Monet was probably upstairs / on the first floor in the house overlooking the terrace. I think he wanted to describe what it feels like to be by the sea on a summer day. As he belonged to the impressionist movement, he was (mostly) interested in visual impressions.

I like this painting because the characters seem to be enjoying a happy and peaceful moment on a beautiful day, which is quite relaxing.
