Bienvenue au cours de FR 2010!
Objectives: The purpose of French 2010 is to review and build upon the grammar & vocabulary learned in 1020, and to increase your proficiency in reading comprehension, writing, speaking, cultural understanding, and listening comprehension. All classes will be conducted in French to enhance your progress and success in these areas. Your active participation will give you increased confidence as you strengthen areas in which you may be somewhat weak; class discussions and activities will enrich your understanding of French and francophone cultures.

Participation: This grade will be based on your contribution to class and to partner or group discussions, quizzes and attendance (see policy below). Always participate willingly and to the best of your ability in these activities! J Class will be conducted in French—you may not always understand every word, but if you understand the general content, you are learning. Always try to say things, including asking questions, in French. Your questions are a very important part of the class, so do not hesitate to ask. Always bring your textbook and SAM to every class.
Examen final: Comprehensive exam over leçons 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
Contrôles: There will be 5 chapter tests, one after each leçon. They will cover all the material that we study including vocabulary, grammar, culture and literature. Lowest test grade will be dropped. The quizzes and tests are mandatory. No make-ups.
Devoirs: Imaginez is organized such that you will need to study the pages listed in the syllabus before doing your homework. SAM homework is due after concepts have been discussed in class and is due on test days. For textbook homework, please write your homework in a notebook, not in the book.
Texbook homework and homework assigned in class is due the next class (see due dates) . Being prepared means you have the concepts understood in your head, as well as the work done on paper.
The Student Activities Manual (SAM) assignments include specified written exercises in the Workbook and Lab Manual exercises; for full credit, all SAM work must be corrected (using the answer key) in a different color. Mistakes should be crossed out and the correction (in a different color) written above or near them. SAM paquet is turned in on each chapter test day. Answer keys are posted online.
Interros: Short quizzes on vocabulary or grammatical structures will be given throughout the semester. These may be announced or unannounced. If you keep up with your classwork and homework, you should do well on these quizzes. They are usually in the 10-15 point range and are included in the participation grade.
Compositions: Drafts are written in class from prepared outline and notes. This will be double-spaced, approximately 1 ½-2 pages long (hand written). A partial grade will be assigned when papers are turned in. The final grade will be assigned after they have been revised. The final copy with revisions is due at the beginning of the class period following the day the papers are returned to you. The final copy should be stapled on top of your draft. It should be typed, in MLA format with a cover page. It should be approximately 1 page.
Each composition should have a short introduction, 2+ body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Feel free to use a (on-line) dictionary, text book and verb book. Do not use Google translate, etc. (see note below about Academic integrity and statement on plagiarism). Turning in your composition means that you are the author and writer of it.

Composition 2: Lecture «Guy Laliberté» P110 Guy Laliberté est un homme d’affaires qui utilise les
médias pour défendre une cause. Trouvez dans l’actualité des exemples d’autres personnes qui utilisent les
médias et leur notoriété pour changer le monde. Employez le vocabulaire du chapitre.
Composition 3: Lecture «le marché de l’espoir» P190 Comparez la condition de la femme en Afrique à celle de la
femme aux Etats-Unis: mariage, travail, statut, enfants. Expliquez avec des exemples. Employez le vocabulaire du
chapitre.
Présentation: You will do an 8-10 minute presentation on a French cultural topic (singer, actress, place, region…) Details will be given in class.
Entretien en français: You will choose an emphasis for your entretien from one of the 5 Imaginez leçons. You should prepare a short monologue after which I will ask questions to clarify and deepen your comments. Be sure to use interesting vocabulary and accurate grammar. The entretien final should be about 10 minutes in length. Details will be given in class.
Tutoring: Available from Madame during office hours. Make an appointment.
Cercle français: Join Cercle français for French culture and snacks. Attend events at your convenience. Meetings occur 1-2 times/month. Check the announcements or see the flyers for upcoming dates and activities.
Travel Abroad: Mme will be leading an education tour to France in June of 2014. More details available on her website. Meetings and additional information will occur in the spring.
Suggestions for optimal language learning: Attend class and do the homework every day. Language learning requires a progressive acquisition of skills. You will not be able to “cram” successfully in a language course. You will need to spend 1-2 hours EVERY day or night doing your homework and practicing listening, speaking and reading in French. You will learn only by constant practice. Come to class prepared and ready to participate. Get yourself into a French “mood” by watching your favorite DVD in French (simply change the language track to French if available), listening to French radio (www.rfi.fr), or visiting French websites, e.g. yahoo.fr, tv5.fr, Youtube, etc. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, open your mind to new ways of thinking and be quick to laugh. On va s’amuser!
