Incoming Residents and Fellows,

On behalf of the Department of Dentistry, we would like to welcome you to the University of Virginia Health System and the Charlottesville area. As you get settled in, we realize, particularly those of you new to the area, may need to find new clinicians for yourself and your family.

The Department of Dentistry has a General Practice Residency Program accredited by the American Dental Association. Our primary mission is to assist UVa physicians in the management of patients with co-morbid medical/dental concerns. However, our department also treats private patients, many of whom are Health System employees. Our office is conveniently located at 1222 Jefferson Park Ave and our staff will do their best to accommodate your scheduling needs.

We recognize some of the financial constraints placed upon you during your residency. Therefore, the services listed below are some of the services offered you at a reduced rate.

  1. Crowns—sometimes referred to as “caps”. This would include porcelain (tooth colored) crowns, porcelain veneer crowns, and gold crowns
  2. Bridges, sometimes referred to as fixed prosthodontics, designed to replace missing teeth. Bridge can be constructed of any of the same materials as crowns.
  3. Veneers, sometimes referred to as cosmetic bonding. Long term veneers are generally constructed of porcelain
  4. Vital bleaching, or “whitening”
  5. Dental implants, designed to replace missing teeth, and the crown or bridge components that these implants support
  6. Removable partial dentures

It is unlikely that the majority of Housestaff, given their relative health and youth as compared to the general population, would require much of the above. However, should the need arise for residents or their spouses, the residents of the Dept. of Dentistry are willing to perform such procedures for their fellow Housestaff at a price discounted from the normal fee. The cost would certainly have to cover any laboratory construction costs, which are those costs associated with the construction of the crown, bridge, etc. that a commercial laboratory charges the department. Regarding any posterior resin restorations, our residents will also charge for these at the comparative amalgam rate. For all other procedures such as routine fillings, root canals, extractions, etc., our normal fee will apply. However, 80% of that fee will be covered by your dental insurance plan (Delta Dental) and the remaining 20% will be your financial responsibility. Since we do not participate with Delta Dental Insurance you will also be responsible for the difference between our fees and the insurance carrier’s allowable fee.

If you have any need or interest in such procedures we suggest that you contactJames Peery at our chief resident, for a consultation.

Best of luck as you begin your residency or fellowship!
