Video-conferencing problems delayed the meeting that started at 4:15.

  1. Chair’s Report

First meeting as Chair, Sherese Brewington Carr thanked commissioners for their support and promised open communications and more fellowship among commissioners. Her focus will begin with a relook at the bylaws. She plans to meet individually with each commissioner.

The Chair appointed Charlotte King as Advocacy Chair.

The Chair announced that she thought the Hall of Fame was a success and thanked the committee and staff. She commented that the Hall of Fame needed more logistics.

All committees should monitor legislation.

  1. Director’s Report

Director Romona Fullman submitted a written report with hand-outs before leaving to conduct a DCW movie presentation and discussion titled “The Souls of Black Girls” in the Carvel Building auditorium.

  2. Education Committee(Barbara McCleary): ACommittee meeting schedule has been established through September 2013. The March meeting hosted 2 guest directors: Lucy O'Donnell, Executive Director of DAPI and Shannon Griffin, Executive Director of the Learning Link of Delaware. The April meeting will have AAUW members in attendance.Barbara McCleary, co-chair of the committee plans to attend a DAPI meeting on April 17th. She will send Chair Brewington-Carr calendar information.
  3. Employment (Judy Taggart) Chair of the committee reported on Equal Pay Day plans. There was a brief discussion on the minimum wage.
  4. Hall of Fame: (Becky Evaristo)Committee Chair reported that the Hall of Fame needs better logistics and needs more commissioners to help. Chair Brewington-Carrsuggested the committee draft a budget and fundraising strategy early in the planning process. Hall of Fame. The Chair recommended that the committee start planning now for the 2014 Hall of Fame.
  5. Health: The committee is scheduled to meet with DHSS Secretary Rita Landgraf at 3pm. The discussion will be about Delaware health initiatives and on how the Affordable Care Act impacts women.

The League of Women Voters is sponsoring an Education conference with a focus on equitable funding, charter schools and accountability.

Sisters In Success is sponsoring a presentation May 13th at the Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution. First Lady Carla Markell will be the keynote speaker. The focus will be on employment, education, health and emotional development.

James Collins reported that his staff is creating the DCW website with a new look and feel due to come out in mid-April. Commissioners should look at the Veterans Commission site. His vision is that the web site should reflect everything that goes on in the state for women.
