THIRTEENTH NATIONAL CONFERENCE

Death and Dying and Mental Health Services

Friday 2nd October 2015

Bryn Howel Hotel, Trevor, Llangollen, Denbighshire, LL20 7UW 01978 860331

The NHS has been described as an anti-death service and mental health services in particular are preoccupied by "unnatural" death such as suicide.Death is often viewed as a risk to be managed rather than a loss to be grieved leaving in its wake reviews of risk assessments and the fear of service reviews of untoward incidents.

We try to engender optimism with the rhetoric about recovery and well being but can struggle to talk about ultimate events like dying. On the other hand there appears to be increasing interest in dying as a voluntary act as interest in the assisted dying bill grows and a desire to find new forums for conversation about death and dying. This conference looks at some of these tensions and will offer participants the chance to join in the developing discussion.
