Dear Klein Collins Art 2/3/4 Photo Students and Parents,

Welcome to the Klein Collins High School Art Program. Thank you for taking art and exploring creative and higher level thinking skills! The purpose of the photography courses is to explore art through the creative uses of camera and darkroom techniques.

Topics we will explore:

History of Photography, famous photographers, darkroom materials and equipment, pinhole cameras, proper development/enlargement times/procedures, exposure calculations, matting/mounting photos, 35mm parts/functions, B/W film, composition, contact prints, critiques of own work as well as other peers, portraits, silhouettes, text, mixed media, digital applications, experimental/alternative processes. Advanced photo 3&4 students may be using a

digital camera as well as a film camera throughout the year.

Photography is a year-long elective class and there are studio material expenses that are needed to create student projects. A one-time $50 material fee will cover 5 rolls of Black & White Film, 25 sheets of 8”X10” print papers, all negative sleeves, and various processing chemicals for film & paper.

The material fee can be sent to school any day on or before Thursday, September 24, 2015.

Art 2/3/4 Photography - Materials Fee: $50 includes

·  5 rolls of black & white film- 24 exposures per roll

·  Photo Paper 10 sheets 1st semester/ 15 sheets 2nd semester

The school furnishes all darkroom tools, equipment and selected materials used during instruction.

Other Supplies:

Other materials such as b/w film and more photo paper may be bought from the Art Department as the year progresses.

·  Extra B/W film = $5 per roll

·  Extra Photo Paper: 10 (8”x10” sheets) = $5

These other materials purchased throughout the year will average a cost approximately $30-40 on top of the yearly fee and those can be purchased as or if needed.

CHOOSING A CAMERA:

Student must have access to a 35mm SLR film camera (NOT digital!) in order to complete this class. Point and shoot cameras will not be acceptable, because students will have assignments to manually set shutter & aperture controls. Please email me if you have questions, after I go over the camera type in class.

Sharing a camera with a classmate is NOT a good idea because students work at different rates and on their own rolls of film. If you do not have a camera now, I suggest checking with family members to borrow one for the entire year. If you are looking to buy a used or new camera, both Houston Camera Exchange (local) and Amazon.com (online) are places that I recommend. The absolute best values though, can be garage sales or sometimes pawn shops.

$50 Material Fee Due Date: Thursday, September 24, 2015

Pay online or Cash/Check accepted. Please make checks payable to: KCHS (memo: please put student’s name).
