Cursillo # 107 – AHC Camp Report

Pre-Cursillo Weekend

The core team meetings spread out over a period of 3 months prior to the team meetings were effective and I must commend John, our Rector, for the excellent communications throughout the preparation for and during the weekend. E-mail was very effective here and some sharing and team building occurred.

Team Meetings

Most participants found the 3 bi-weekly meetings much easier to fit into their schedules.

The joint training/discussions on weekend activities with the women was not a success, as things seem to be done quite differently by the women.

The emphasis on spiritual preparation was much appreciated.

As AHC Camp, I made sure to get bunk preferences from the team during these meetings.

Cursillo Weekend

From a ‘Camp’ perspective everything ran very smoothly.

Camp Preparation

Arrived mid-morning on Thursday and immediately set out the bunk allocations, Bunkhouse diagrams and signs in each Bunkhouse. Used the back half of St. Mary’s as the Prayer Chapel.

Jim Foster repaired the ‘Prayer to the Holy Spirit’ banner for the Rollo Room.

NOTE: I recommend that a new banner be made for the next series of weekends (speak to Jim Foster about this).

Team Eucharist

This Eucharist and the blessing of the candles/bibles/songbooks/aprons were done in the Dining Hall to allow the Rollo Room chefs to participate while checking the dinner.

Registration

This ran very smoothly. A bunk allocation diagram was used at Registration to assist Cursillistas take the candidates to the correct room.

The pre-printed luggage labels were used in conjunction with the card luggage tags from the shed.

Jim Foster penmanship was used on the ‘baloney’s.

Note: Two candidates arrived without any sleeping gear. Sponsors need to remind candidates about bringing bedding up the mountain.

Stations of the Cross

A new format for this was used and I believe it was the most successful yet.

Fr. John Conrad and Bob Lawrence prepared a digital presentation of the Stations of the Cross with music and narration.

After the introductions on Thursday evening, the Candidates were given 10 minutes break and that time was used to set up the data projector, sound system and screen.

A white sheet suspended from the 2 screens up at Camp Stevens was used. In future, a better screen needs to be arranged.

Sin & Reconciliation

No ‘spot-light’ was found in the shed and so a ‘standing’ lamp from the Palanca room was used. This gave adequate light and atmosphere to the dining hall.

Fr. John did not want to use the tiny pieces of Flash paper that was found in the shed. Two new books of flash paper were used and each page was cut in half. This gave a better-sized piece of paper to everyone.

Lights were switched off for the burning of the paper.

Foot Washing

The usual format was used, i.e. 4 foot washing teams, each handling a quarter of the circle of chairs. Two kitchen teams handled the basins and towels.

A better system needs to be devised to deal with the washing of the ‘workers’ feet once the initial washing has been completed.

De Colores Lunch

To suit the mode of the weekend, only the De Colores banners and the ‘Rooster’ pitchers were used to compliment the meal. Worked well!

Agape Dinner

All but one table was used to form the cross-shaped table. This table was stored outside. The rest of the furniture was pushed against the windows to make as much space as possible and nothing was left lying around.

The table clothes delivered to Camp Stevens were too narrow to cover the tables with any overlap; so 2 clothes were used on either side. Thanks again to Jim Foster who had the patience to fold the clothes correctly where the tables crossed.

NOTE: The FOIL supplied from the shed is too narrow and so the industrial wide foil from the Kitchen was used.

Luminaries

A change was made to the SCHEDULE, since in the spring it is still too light to use the luminaries before dinner.

During coffee, the assigned team placed the luminaries along the path to the Rollo Room and this worked really well as the Candidates and Rollo Room left the dining hall.

Clausura Preparations

Preparation for both open and closed Clausuras was done in the typical way with no deviations.

Conclusion

The Shed was tidied, the prayer request boxes collected and the key handed over to Lani Woods for the Women’s weekend.
