I. Course Description

This course will immerse students in the target language, providing them with a classroom experience common in advanced-intermediate college courses. Listening, speaking, reading, writing, and exploration of French culture will be emphasized throughout the year so as to best prepare students for the rigor of the new AP French Language and Culture Exam in the Spring of 2013.

II. Supplies

  1. Primarytexts—Allons au-delà!(R. Ladd - Pearson) and D’accord! 3 (Vista Higher Learning)
  2. Secondary texts—AP French: Preparing for the Language and Culture Examination (R. Ladd – Pearson)

Barron’s AP French Language and Culture (Kurbegov and Weiss)

  1. Dictionary (I recommend Le Robert Micro)
  2. Two single subject spiral notebooks: one for notes for French class only, the other for your in-class writing exercises and essay drafts (both may be combined into one if desired).
  3. One two or three-inch binder, and several folders for handouts that will accumulate over the year. I strongly recommend that all class materials (notes, writing notebook, folders) be kept together in your class binder.
  4. Pens, pencils, etc. for writing

III. Course Objectives

  1. Tocontinually improve fluency and increase confidence in producing and understanding French as a second language.
  2. To prepare students for the AP French Language and Culture Exam.
  3. To prepare students as fully as possible for intermediate-advanced studies in the target language at the college level.

IV. Expectations

  1. Complete all assignments on time (“on time” meaning completed and ready to hand in to the instructor during class ONLY; all other homework is late). Late homework will not be accepted unless extenuating circumstances require it.
  2. Make up all missed homework and/or assessments in a timely fashion. Students should speak with the instructor immediately upon their return regarding missed assessments and/or assignments.Taking missed assessments or completing homework before the projected time of absence is also possible.
  3. Bring all required materials to classevery day. Do not leave class for any reason once the bell rings.
  4. Follow school rules as well as classroom rules as explained by the instructor on the first day of classes.
  5. Cheating in any way, shape or form is a violation of the WHS Honor Codeand will result in the necessary disciplinary action as set out in the WHS Handbook. Additionally, it will result in the grade of 0 (this applies to anything as assigned to you by the instructor for a grade, from homework to testing). Cheating includes the use of online translators or phone translating apps; do not use them. It is extremely obvious to me when they are used. Use your instructor, your dictionary and/or your textbook to answer whatever questions you may have.
  6. You are expected to speak in the target language at all times, paying close attention to your accent. Speaking in English and/or having blatant disregard for correct pronunciation will lower your grade. The more you speak, the more you will learn, and the fewer mistakes you will make later in the year. This requirement is set in place to ensure student success on the oral proficiency portion of the AP exam.
  7. Each quarter one test grade will be given for not speaking English and more importantly, for speaking French. Each time a student speaks in English this test grade will be lowered and this will account for 1/2 of this grade. The other 1/2 of this grade will come from participation and pronunciation.Making mistakes will NOT lower your grade.
  8. It is not only important to pass but rather to master the material presented in class. What you learn one day will be used to teach a different concept on the next day. In addition, mastery of the material presented will best prepare you for the AP exam. Absenteeism is therefore not encouraged and severe absenteeism may induce failure.
  1. Grade Distribution

Grades for each quarter will be made up of: Formal Assessments 80% (Summative 60% & Formative 20%), Daily Work 20%(In-class work/participation 10%, homework 10%).
