Objectives

  • Study social behavior and organization of human society
  • Describe the development of the field of sociology as a social science
  • Identify methods and strategies of research leading to an understanding of how the individual relates to society and the ever changing world
  • Learn the importance and role of culture, social structure, socialization, and social change in today's society

I am looking forward to an exciting, fun and productive semester with you. In order to succeed in this class you should know a few things:

  • All of the rules that exist in the Student Handbook apply inside this classroom.
  • Class is in session from bell to bell, but the bell does not dismiss you. I dismiss you. Please come into the classroom when the warning bell rings and be in your seat when the tardy bell rings. It is not appropriate to shuffle papers or prepare to leave before the bell rings especially when other students are presenting. Lining up by the door is not an option.
  • Come prepared to class. It is your responsibility to take care of personal needs between classes. Please do not use the pass the first 15 minutes or last 15 minutes of class. Please do not use the pass if someone is speaking to the entire class. If you have a medical condition that requires more frequent trips to the restroom, we will be happy to take a look at your nurse’s/doctor’s note and discuss the issue with you in private.
  • No food or drinks (except water) in the classroom. This is not the cafeteria. No gum during presentations!
  • No electronic devices during instruction. I will be giving you my full attention; I expect the same from you.
  • Please gather trash and deposit it in the recycling bin or wastebasket as you leave. Nothing goes airborne!
  • Please keep the desks and other school property in good condition. Gum under desks is gross.
  • Please respect my personal space and belongings. This includes desk, storage cabinet, and filing cabinets. Should you need office supplies, just ask. In return, I will not dig through your backpacks or purses.
  • You are only authorized to adjust the temperature if Ms. Delmorehas specifically given you permission to do so. I have to be in this room all day, and I like it cold. You’re only here for one period, so bring a sweater if you need one.
  • Class is not an appropriate time for personal grooming.
  • Watch your language. I support freedom of speech. That said, this is a classroom. One key to successful communication is recognizing the appropriate time and place for different types of language. Cursing is inappropriate in this classroom. In addition, any language that discourages others from participating by negatively categorizing them will not be tolerated. This should be a safe space for everyone. Racial epithets like the n-bomb or words that denigrate any group of people are unacceptable. Phrases like “that’s retarded” or “that’s so gay” are also inappropriate. Think before you speak.
  • Substitute teachers will be treated with the utmost respect.
  • Take fire, tornado, and lockdown drills seriously. Your safety is my top priority.
  • All rulesare subject to be amended at my discretion.

Attendance

Be here every day and on time. If you have to miss class, expect to make up your time after-school in tutoring or an assigned FIT session to help you stay on track. The mandatory attendance policy this year states that:

State Law requires that students must be in attendance for a minimum of 90% of the days that the class is offered in order to receive credit for that course. Students who miss more than 10% of the class meeting time could lose credit.
According State Law, seat-time CANNOT be made up if a student’s attendance rate for a course falls below 75%. A student in this situation must repeat the course, which means that you will not get credit for the class under any circumstances. If you miss half the class period or more the state considers that an absence. If you miss 10% of any class, you will have a meeting with your parents and an attendance committee to address the issue.

Grading

Daily grades (warm-ups, in-class assignment, etc) = 40% of your grade. Tests/Projects = 60% of your grade.

Academic Dishonesty

Any cheating or plagiarizing will result in a grade of zero.
