ColoursUsedTable 15 November 2010 http://www.maphistory.info/ColoursUsedTable.doc

COLOURS USED FOR THE ISLANDS, ESTUARIES, ETC.

·  The 'Totals' column records the total number of distinct colours found on a single work or a chartmaker's entire surviving output

·  A bracket round the tick indicates an alternative or a tint not used on all that chartmaker's work; this is therefore not included in the Totals

·  The Gold/Yellow category includes the occasional instance of gold leaf

·  The identification of silver (leaf - which may appear black?) is tentative and not included in the Totals either.

·  'Riccardiana' refers to the earliest surviving Genoese chart, tentatively dated to the period 1300-25 (Pujades C 4) in the Biblioteca Riccardiana, Florence
