ROP Course Offerings for 2011-2012
The purpose of the ROP program is to provide students with career insight and to prepare them for the “world of work.” Our courses provide academic studies and hands-on-training. Many of our courses are UC approved and meet the Visual and Performing arts requirement. Students in grade levels 9-12 can enroll in many of the ROP courses. For impacted courses, priority will be given to upper classmen.
Introduction to Digital Design- UC Approved
This class introduces students to the software and technologies used
to create much of what constitutes graphic design in the world
around us: websites, posters, packaging and other promotional
materials associated with marketing and branding. Students will
investigate the fundamentals of two-dimensional design primarily
through hands-on projects and exercises. Students will learn to
differentiate between Abobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator, the two
primary digital design applications, but also how they function
together to produce digital media. Students will contextualize these
skills by way of research and presentations that engage the history
and vocabulary of art and design. The class also includes exposure
to Adobe InDesign and Adobe Flash. This class will be offered period
1, 2, 3 and 4.
Digital Design:Emphasis Screen Printing- UC Approved
Students will learn the fundamentals of textile screen printing. The
course focuses on preparing stencils digitally and by hand,
preparing screens for simple textile applications, such as t-shirts,
and using registration systems for printing multiple colors. In
addition to developing fundamental skills in both Adobe Photoshop
and Adobe Illustrator, students will learn to use a four-color
rotary press, flash and belt dryers and pin systems for accuracy of
registration. Students will contextualize these skills by way of
research and presentations that engage the history and vocabulary of
art and design. Safe use of materials and equipment is also
emphasized. This class will be offered on T/TH 1p.m. - 3p.m. or
3:30p.m. - 6p.m.
Business Management- UC Approved
This class prepares students with competencies necessary to start and be successful in a business of their own. Class includes business plan design, marketing, advertising and capital requirement. Students will participate in a 30-day business simulation exercise. Students will have hands on experience in the student store, be responsible for inventory, ordering, sales and advertising decisions as well as staffing the store for duration of the class.
Fashion Merchandising and Design
Students will learn basic concepts of design, sewing, current trends and career opportunities in the fashion industry. Focus is on the economics of fashion, and trends that have changed the history of fashion. Students will have hands on experience through sewing projects and participation in school fashion shows. Internships will be available for Juniors and Seniors.

Students who are employed may enroll in this class for a combination of classroom and on-the-job training. The classroom portion of the program is designed to provide students with competencies necessary
to enhance their employment. Students must be employed or have a paid job within the first week of the semester and maintain employment for duration of the class. Students can earn up to 10 credits per semester.
3D Animation and Motion Graphics-UC Approved
This course is designed to prepare students for the world of 3D Animation. Students will learn to use the latest 3D animation tools such as Cinema 4D, and compositing programs such as After Effects. The class will cover principals of animation, keyframes, lighting, modeling, motion graphics, and compositing. We will also dive into some video editing, adding sound, and exporting media files. Students will have assets for their reels by the end of the term.
Media Arts - UC Approved
The Media Arts class is a hands on media and filmmaking course. Students will write scripts, cast actors, use digital video cameras, learn video post production using the latest industry professional tools, and create films, commercials, PSA’s, and documentaries. Students will form teams and enter film festivals and contests with their work. Students will learn how to pitch ideas and to address notes on their work.

The News Media Class gives students a wide view of multimedia journalism. Students will analyze news media using a variety sources: newspapers, broadcasts, magazines, and radio. Students will gain knowledge of news gathering techniques, news writing for broadcast and public speaking. Students will learn Broadcasting operations such as: Directing, Camera operating, lighting, and set design and use those skills to produce our own Titan News segments. Students will be trained to direct productions and in addition students will help run our online web presence www.SMHSnews.com by creating programming, and posting them to multi video services on the web. This class meets every Tuesday from 4:00 – 8:00 pm.
Media Arts: Field Class
This Class is an addition to the Media Arts class. The class will allow students to complete field productions outside of class time. Students will work as camera operators, production coordinators, editors, and producers. By taking this class you will ascertain field production skills, responsibility, self-sufficiency, and industry skills that will aid you in the college and the industry world. Must be enrolled in Media Arts class. Class meets every Monday from 4:00 -6:00 pm + TBA hours
Professional Photography / Intro to Digital Photo / Advanced Professional Photography UC Approved
This class is an introduction to the use of the digital darkroom to create and manipulate photographic images. Students use digital camera as an expressive tool to find creative solutions to problem-solving and critical thinking. Areas of exploration include, portraiture, landscape and product illustration producing portfolios of work for post secondary application, or personal use. Students are introduced to Adobe Photoshop to creatively manipulate images. Advanced students will participate in more complex photographic workshops.
Digital Design/ Commercial Art UC Approved
Students will learn the fundamentals of typography (letter & type design), layout and design, logo design, calligraphy, cartooning and illustration. Students will be introduced to Adobe PhotoShop as well as Adobe Illustrator. A section of the class will focus on digital design.
Architectural Rendering/Design Beg/Int/Adv

Students will learn the foundations of Architectural Rendering and Interior Design which include the perceptual, social and technological skills necessary to create, express and execute in both 2-D and 3-D. Using traditional rendering techniques and tools, students create hand drawn shapes and layouts, then progress to wire frame and CADD designs. Advanced students will learn the correct techniques of model building, how to produce realistic mockups and prototypes. Students will learn in depth fundamentals of CADD.
