PLAYOFF AND CHAMPIONSHIP MANAGEMENT

The Playoff and Championships are the direct responsibility of the CIF Los Angeles City Section. The Sport Coordinator shall coordinate and facilitate the administration of the Playoff and Championship. The Sport Coordinator will oversee game management and operations of the Championship event. He will be responsible for logistical and security aspects of the championship and will be available to assist participating schools. All questions regarding game management and logistics should be directed to the Sport Coordinator.

DIVISION FORMAT

Schools have been designated Division I, Division II, and Division III prior to the season, based on RPI ranking. Post-season tournament participation will be based on the final ranking using only games versus LA City Section schools and established seeding criteria. Division III will be composed of Small School only:Maximum enrollment 1250.

PLAYOFF FORMAT

Division I & II will have an8 team wild card round, to qualify for a sixteen team single elimination post-seasontournament to determine a Division Champion. Division III will have a 16 team, four round playoff tournament.

The higher seeded team will be the designated home team for each round, to include the championship game. Division I & II semi final round will be played at a neutral site. All championship games will be played at a neutral site.

PLAYOFF SEEDING

Participating schools will be selected using two rating systems as a tool for seeding: An end-of-season Coach’s Poll and a Ratings Percentage Index (RPI). Leagues are required to submit their post season coach’s poll to Abel Navar, the playoff coordinator, by May 9 at 1 pm. Email the coach’s poll to . Leagues are required to submit a poll for each division for which their teamsareassigned. The Seeding Committee will be asked to evaluate the rankings and criteria to determine each seed. A majority vote will determine each seed. Other criteria used to assist the seeding will include: A tie breaking system was designed to determine the league finish for teams that end the league season in a tie.

All other ranking data has been included in the RPI. To avoid first round head to head with a league opponent, adjustments to the seeding or exceptions to the criteria may be necessary.

AUTOMATIC PLAYOFF BERTH

Each first place league finisher will receive an automatic playoff berth to their respective division. All other teams will be placed in the at-large pool for entry into the playoffs.

Seeding for each division will be determined by a Playoff Seeding Committee. The voting members of the seeding committee will be comprised of:

The seeding meeting will be held on Monday, May 11 - 4:00 PM. Location: Section Office 8401 Arleta Ave., Sun Valley, CA 91353. This meeting will be closed to media, coaches and the public.

Criteria to be used for seeding include:

  1. RPI ranking
  2. Coaches’ poll
  3. League standing
  4. Head to head results will be provided to the seeding committee

All seeding information will be posted on the Section web site by 8:00 PM on Monday, May 11th. Emails with playoff brackets will be sent to the Athletic Director for the schools selected to participate in the playoffs as soon as the brackets are completed.

UMPIRES AND OTHER EXPENSES

The home school is responsible for paying officialsat all home site contest at the rate listed in the Gold Book. All necessary expenses for home site contest will be divided equally between the two participating schools. Authorization for LAUSD School Police will not be granted without approval from the Section Office. No reimbursements will be provided for home site contest. Division I & II semi final expenses will be taken from the gate receipts; Section Office personnel will manage the field reservations, ticket and program sales for the semi-finals & final rounds. CIFLA City Section will pay all operating expenses for allchampionship games.

GAME SITES

The wild card games and first two rounds of Division I & II playoff gameswill be played at the home field site of the higher seeded team unless the field is a non-regulation facility and there is not mutual coach’s agreement. Refer to

Ground Rules. Division I & II Semi final games will be played at an alternate site to accommodate fees for admission. The Section Office will coordinate the semi and final rounds in Division I & II. First, second and Semi-final rounds in Division III will be played at the home site of higher seed.

SUPERVISION

Administrative and/or faculty supervision is required for spectator control at for all playoff and championship contest. Games played at an off campus site require an administrative representative from both school (see rule 1308 in Gold Book). Respectful behavior is required of all spectators at all times. Administrator and/or Athletic Directors are expected to monitor their dugout at the semi-final and final rounds; only qualified coaches, players, team managers and a school photographer will be permitted in the dugout. No children under high school age are allowed in the team dugout or on the field at any time during the event (request for exceptions will not be granted). Unauthorized individuals are not allowed on the field before, during, or after the games. All school behavior and sportsmanship rules and policies will be enforced during the event.

PRE-GAME WARM-UP

Pre Section Bylaws, warm up and stretching must be completed in the outfield nearest the team dugout and before infield practice isscheduled to begin. Teams are to clear the outfield 50 minutes prior to game time to begin pre-game infield practice. The home team will take pre-game infield practice beginning 45 minutes before game time. The visiting team will take pre-game infield practice 30 minutes before game time. The National Anthem is to be played ten minutes prior to game time, followed by the official’s pre-game meeting. It is required that the head coach attend the pre-game meeting.

OFFICIAL BASEBALL

Diamond is the official ball sponsor of the CIF Los Angeles City Section Baseball Playoffs. One dozen Diamond CIFLA balls will be provided to all participating schools for the first round of the playoffs. An additional dozen balls will be provided to the home teams for the second round games. The designed home team for the Division III semi-final games will receive a dozen balls. Each school is responsible for arranging for pick-up of the game balls at the Section Office prior to their game.

The Section office will provide the game balls for all Division I & II semi-final and all championship games.

ANNOUNCER & SCORE KEEPER

The attached Sportsmanship Announcement is to be read prior to each game andthe attached sponsor’s script is to be read before, during and at the concussion of each game. The HOME school will be responsible for the score keeper and announcer at all home site playoff games and the semi final game. The home score book will be the official scorebook for all rounds to include the semi-final. The Section Office will provide the announcer and scorekeeper at all championship games.

MEDIA

CIF Los Angeles City Section “Media Pass” will be honored for admission for all playoff games. Media Press Box and/or Field Passes will be issued by the designated home school in all rounds except the finals. Media press box and field passes for the finals will be issued to verifiable media outlets upon request to the Section Office. Section Application Forms for media press box / field passes can be obtained from the section web site.

BROADCAST RIGHTS

Time Warner Cable is the broadcast partner of the CIF Los Angeles City Section and has exclusive rights to all broadcast and webcast for all Section events to include playoffs and championship games. Request to broadcast and/or webcast of any CIF Los Angeles City Section playoff game must be approved in advance by Time Warner Cable. All formal request to broadcast or web cast a playoff game must be received in the section office at least 10 days prior to the playoff game. Request forms can be obtained form the section web site; All broadcast and/or webcast requests are subject to the Time Warner Broadcast agreement. The Los Angeles City Section has the exclusive rights to all radio broadcast and request must be submitted to the Section Office for Commissioner for approval 10 days prior to the event.

SCORE REPORTING

The advancing team is responsible for reporting game scores to the Abel Navar, the Playoff Tournament Coordinator, and to post on MaxPreps website immediately following the conclusion of the game. GROUND RULES

If ground rules are used at selected game sites, the ground rules must remain consistent with what has been used during the regular season. Teams must have prior mutual coach’s agreement to play at a non-regulation facility (flat pitching area). If mutual agreement does not occur, the home school will be required to secure an alternate site for playoff games that meets the NFHS regulation. In the event a regulation site cannot be secured by the home team, the game will be moved to the opponent’s facility or a facility that meets the NFHS regulations. All synthetic mounds must meet the NFHS regulations for installation. Refer to rule 1, Section 2 in the NFHS Rule Book.

CONDUCT OF COACHES AND PLAYERS

As a representative of the finest baseball teams in the CIF Los Angeles City Section, appropriate behavior and good sportsmanship are the expectation of all participants throughout the playoffs without exception. During the game, all NFHS and CIF rules and regulations will be enforced. Players and coaches must remain in the dugout at all times, except for persons occupying the coach’s box and the on-deck batter. Administrators from participating schools are encouraged to schedule a player and coaches’ meeting prior to the scheduled playoff game to discuss acceptable behaviors before, during and after the game in accordance with Rules and Regulations Governing Interscholastic Athletics; refer to rule Section Bylaws.

CHAMPIONSHIP PROGRAM

Coaches must submit a team photo and roster using the official excel roster template or uploading on to CIF Home. The roster template will be emailed to all coaches as well as be posted on the Section website. All information must be provided by each team who advances to the quarterfinals. This information should include player’s name, number, height, weight, position, year. Team photo and school logo in JPEG format are also required. This information will be due to by May 22.

DIVISION I & II SEMI-FINAL INFORMATION PACKETS

The Athletic Director from the participating Division I & II schools will receive all semi-final game information via email on Saturday, May 23, before 12:00 noon.
