Policies and rules

U PUP dogs should be comfortable walking on any safe surface, including grates, slick floors, sand, gravel and stairs. U PUP dogs should not be taken on escalators and may not visit dog parks. U PUP dogs must always be on leash and must wear the gentle leader and vest when training. U PUP dogs can go on outdoor exercise walks unvested, but must still wear the gentle leader and leash at all times.

U PUP dogs should not be taken off campus without written permission from the U PUP Advisor.

U PUP dogs should not attend class, go in the dining hall, enter labs, or enter dorm rooms with the student trainers. Acceptable activities include meetings, study groups, outdoor walks, shopping, surface practice, Hurry Cane shuttle, training and club activities.

U PUP trainers must wear the U PUP t-shirt and carry a training card or photo of the card when working.

Always be confident, respectful and polite when training a U PUP service dog. There is no need to ask permission to enter with the U PUP dog, but be prepared to present the training card, if asked. If you are denied access to any area, politely state that the dog is a service dog in training and is allowed access under the Americans with Disabilities Act and Florida Statute 413.08. If you are still denied access, politely ask for the person’s contact information, leave the area and report the incident to the U PUP Advisor.
Be the Pack Leader
- Always determine when an activity will start and finish
- The pack leader controls grooming and physical contact
- Be confident
- Be patient
- Be objective
- Sit or stand up straight
- Hold your head up
- Be consistent

Praise Your Puppy
Teach your puppy to enjoy listening and responding to your commands. Showing and praising desirable actions are much more effective training methods
Types of praise:
- Soft, gentle encouraging voice
- Enthusiastic encouraging voice
- Bright smile
- Expression of approval
- Light physical touch
- Enthusiastic petting
- Game or reward with toys
- Food treat
Use correction (“no” or “don’t”) to stop undesirable behavior patterns like:

BARKING/ WHINING/GROWLING

BITING/NIPPING/LICKING

CAPE/ GENTLE LEADER: RUBS OR PAWS WON’T MOVE WHILE WEARING

CHASING: SMALL ANIMALS LEAVES/SHADOWS TAIL

CHEWING: INAPPROPRIATE ITEMS

DIGGING

DISTRACTED: BY PEOPLE BY DOGS OR OTHER ANIMALS BY MOVING OBJECTS BY FOOD

EXCITABLE GREETINGS; JUMPING ON PEOPLE OR FURNITURE

FEARFUL/NERVOUS: AROUND PEOPLE AROUND DOGS AROUND OTHER ANIMALS OF LOUD/SUDDEN NOISES

RESISTS CRADLING
