1.Background Information

1.1.Research within the Charity is undergoing an exciting time as the investment into world class medical research has increased. The Research GrantsManager coordinates calls for proposals on an annual basis. This consists of the launch and administration of new calls for grant applications, fellowships calls and our brain tumour initiative.

1.2.The post holder is responsible for on-going grants management including budgets, contracts, reporting and the entire application and peer review process during regular grant-giving rounds. The Research Grants Manager also communicates the research programme and provides expertise on other on-going, both within the Charity and externally.

1.3.The post holder will help to oversee the grant programme ensuring that the grant application processes are managed effectively. The Charity’s Scientific Advisory Panel (SAP) carries out peer review of all scientific funding applications, so that the Charity supports only the highest quality research, that the research programme is promoted nationally and internationally, and that the programme’s outputs are continually reviewed– maximising the impact of the Charity’s research investment.

2.Research Programmes

2.1.Develop the remit of the call in collaboration with the SAP- ensuring the Charity receives high quality applications for funding, that applications are appropriately tracked and peer reviewed and funding recommendations are made to deadline

2.2.Support the work of the(SAP) – organising meetings and ensuring that SAP members receive the information necessary to support them in their role

2.3.Support the implementation and development of a new grant management database

2.4.Manage ad hoc requests for grant funding, whether from individual researchers or from partner organisations.

2.5.To maintain and develop the reviewer database.

2.6.Support the set up and coordination of peer review and interview panels accordingly

2.7.Ensure the scientific accuracy of internal and external publicity around the research programme, for example in fundraising mail outs, newsletters, website content and press releases.

2.8.Monitor outputs of research funded by the Charity and use this information to promote the Charity’s work.

2.9.Respond to enquires about the Charity’s funded research and research programme (for example, from prospective applicants, supporters or peer reviewers)

2.10.Support the Chief Executive and Scientific Directorin raising the profile of the Charity’s research programme externally – networking with researchers, scientists and other key stakeholders.

2.11.To manage ad hoc requests for grant funding, whether from individual researchers or from partner organisations.

3.General Duties

3.1.Complete Annual returns to the Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC) and the National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI) must be compiled and submitted.

3.2.Establish and maintain the researchfish outcome monitoring tool.

3.3.Maintain and develop the reviewer database.

3.4.Develop and maintain funding partnerships.

3.5.Develop and manage relevant events.

3.6.Develop and manage relevant new projects.

4.Research Communications Management

4.1.To work with the communications and external affairs team to manage the research communications programme, ensuring the effective and timely communication of information on the Charity’s research.

4.2.To manage and ensure the prompt response to enquiries from members if the public researchers, staff and others about issues related to our research

EducationQualifications /
  • Education to degree level, in a scientific discipline
/ PhD desirable
Experience /
  • Proven experience of grants management in a major research organisation
  • Experience of working with senior external stakeholders
  • Experience of preparing complex reports and papers
  • Experience of grants management at a senior level.
  • Proactively identifies potential issues before they arise and independently devises solutions
  • Experience of leading a complex programme of work whilst maintaining links with other relevant internal and external teams
  • Experience of managing research budgets

  • Ability to work with a large number of stakeholders, with at times conflicting needs
  • Able to effectively and appropriately communicate complexresearch messages to staff, researchers and members of the public
  • Project management skills
  • Ability to understand and communicate research and scientific concepts clearly

  • Excellent communications skills with the ability to write clearly and concisely and to grasp complex medical/scientific information and translate into lay language
