AP French Summer Assignment

Check out novel and CD: Les Misérables Author: Victor Hugo

Watch: I suggest you watch the film Les Misérables, which is available on Netflix and other places online before reading the novel. I advise you to watch it in French. You can decide based upon your current level of French whether or not you choose to play it with subtitles. By viewing the film first, it will provide you with background knowledge about what you will read in the novel and help you to better follow the story.

Quizlet: Sign up to the AP Summer Assignment Group at Each chapter has a vocabulary set with some of the new terms for this chapter. Before reading each chapter you should go through the flashcards and familiarize yourself with some of the vocabulary first.

Assignment on Novel: Read each chapter carefully. You should complete one chapter each week over the course of summer to keep your French “fresh.” You have 11 weeks of summer break and 11 chapters to complete. At the end of each chapter, you will complete both reading comprehension exercises and grammar/vocabulary practice related to the chapter. Do not wait until the end of the summer to begin reading the text.

  1. Keep a vocabulary list with the new vocabulary terms you learn that are important to the story and its translation for each chapter.
  2. Write a short description of each of the main characters in French in your own words. A couple of sentence to explain their importance to the story is sufficient(Jean Valjean, MonseignerMyriel, Madame Magloire, Fantine, Monsieur Madeleine, Javert, Monsieur et Madame Thénardier, Cosette, Éponine, Azelma, Marius PontmercyGavroche, Monsieur Gillnormand, Fauchelevent)
  3. Complete the reading comprehension, vocabulary and grammar practice associated with the chapters as listed below. Complete one chapter each week. Feel free to email me with any questions you may have over the course of the summer.
  4. Write your vocabulary list descriptions and text exercises on separate paper in French and turn it in for your summer assignment for 15% of your 3rd quarter grade. If you complete one chapter each week, you will benefit from the work much more than if you just attempt to cram at the end of the summer simply to complete the work.
