TheprofessionaldutiesoftheHeadteacherarecontainedintheSchoolTeacher’sPayandConditions

Documentand thekeyareas of Headship are contained inthe DfENationalStandardsforHeadteachers.

A Headteacher shallcarryout his/herprofessionalduties inaccordance withandsubjectto:

  • TheSchoolTeachers’Pay and ConditionsDocument
  • Theprovisionsof theEducation Acts
  • Anyorders andregulationshavingeffectthereunder
  • Theinstrumentof government oftheschoolofwhichs/he isheadteacher
  • Brent Education Authoritypolicies
  • Brent EducationDevelopment Plan
  • Targets as agreed withtheLocalAuthority.

A Headteacher shallcarryout suchdutiesinaccordancewithand subjecttothefollowing:

  • Anyrules,regulationsorpolicieslaiddown by the governing bodyundertheirpowers
  • Anyrules,regulationsorpolicieslaiddown by the authoritywith respecttomattersforwhichthe governing body isnotsoresponsible
  • Anyrules,regulationsorpolicieslaiddown byhis/heremployers,and
  • Thetermsofhis/heremployment.

A Headteacher shallberesponsibleforthe internalorganisation,managementand controlof theschool.

Incarrying outhis/herduties aHeadteachershallconsult,whereappropriate,with theauthority,the governing body,the staff,theparents of itspupils,thepupilsthemselvesand thelocalcommunity.

Strategicdirection anddevelopmentofthe school:

Leading byexample, providingeducationalvision anddirectionto securethestrongandpassionatecommitmentofstaff,parents/guardiansand pupils.

  • Leading theselection and appointmentof theteaching andnon-teaching staffofthe school.

  • Deploying andmanaging allteaching andnon-teaching staffof theschooland allocatingparticular dutiesto them(including such duties oftheHeadteacherasmaybeproperlydelegatedtoa DeputyHeadteacher,AssistantHeadteacherorothermemberofstaff) in amannerconsistentwith theirconditionsofemployment,maintaining a reasonablebalanceforeach teacher betweenworkcarriedoutin schoolandworkcarried outelsewhere
  • Considering in particularinrelationto suchallocationof dutieshowfarthe duties ofthe headteachermaybedelegatedto anydeputyheadteacheror assistanthead teacher
  • Ensuring that theduty of providing coverforabsent teachersissharedequitablyamong allteachersintheschool(including theheadteacher),taking accountoftheirteaching andotherduties
  • Ensuring thatteachersattheschoolreceiveinformationtheyneed tocarryout theirprofessionaldutieseffectively,
  • Ensuring that staffare aware ofcurrenteducationaldevelopmentsandare keptup to datethrough an ongoing programmeof continuousprofessionaldevelopment
  • Leading,motivating,supporting,challenging and developing staff at alllevelsinorderto secureand sustain continuous improvement andstaff well-being andtobecommittedtopersonalcontinuing professionaldevelopment
  • Supporting middle andseniorleadership oftheschooltobuild capacity,recognizeexistingtalentsandencouragedelegation
  • Challenging underperformance atall levelsand putting in placeeffectiveprocedurestodealwith underperforming staff
  • Providing information,references andtestimonials abouttheworkandperformance ofstaffemployed atthe school,with dueregardto the principlesofequalopportunities,wheresuchinformation is relevanttotheirfutureemployment.
  • Maintaining relationshipswithorganisationsrepresenting teachersandotherpersonsonthestaffof theschool.
  • Determining,organizing andimplementing abroadand balancedcurriculumfortheschool,having regardtotheneeds,experiences,interests,aptitudesand stageofdevelopmentofthepupils andtheresourcesavailabletotheschool
  • Securing that all pupils inattendanceattheschooltakepartin dailycollectiveworship
  • Ensuring thatimprovements in thecurriculumare apriorityforallpupils including thosewithSEN,the more able, Pupil PremiumandEAL.
  • Ensuring thatall aspects ofschoolperformanceare monitored andevaluated inarobust,cyclicalmannerandmaintaining arecordofself-evaluation and areas forimprovement, andof progressmadeinrespectof these.
  • Evaluating thestandardsofteaching andlearningintheschool,and ensuring thatproperstandards ofprofessionalperformance areestablished andmaintained.

  • Supervising/participating in arrangements forthe appraisalofteacher performance
  • Participating inarrangementsmadefortheappraisalof his/herperformanceasaHeadteacher,and that ofotherstaff whoare theresponsibilityofthesameappraising body
  • Participating inthe identificationof areas inwhichs/hewouldbenefitfrom/undergo training
  • Ensuring that all staff in theschoolhave accesstoadviceand training appropriatetotheirneeds, in accordancewiththepoliciesof the maintaining authorityand governingbody
  • Ensuring thatnewly-qualified teachers andthosereturning toteaching after a break inservicehaveaccesstoadequatesupport intheirfirstyear of service or resumedservice
  • Being responsibleforthe supervision/training ofteachersduring theirinduction periods inaccordancewith InductionRegulations;making arecommendationat the end ofsuchinduction periods asto whetherteachers havemetprescribedinduction standards asrequired
  • Ensuring thatteachers servinginduction periods undertheInduction Regulationsdonotteachmore than90%ofthe timea teacherat thatschoolwhodoesnotreceiveamanagementallowancewouldbeexpected to teach.
  • Assessing (subjecttoapprovalbyan assessor)whethera teacher attheschoolwhoappliesfor athresholdassessmenthaspassed thethreshold
  • Explaining to ateacherwhomakes anapplicationfora threshold assessmentthereasons fortheoutcomeof his/herapplicationand giving him/heradvice aboutthe aspectsofhis/herperformancewhichwouldbenefitfromfurtherdevelopment
  • Where requested byhim/hertodoso providingassistanceto an assessor inrelation tothresholdassessments attheschool.
  • Providing information about the workand performance of thestaffemployed atthe schoolwherethis is relevanttotheir futureemployment.
  • Ensuring that theprogress of pupils ofthe school ismonitored andrecorded
  • Ensuring continuing effectivesystems of planning,assessment,recording andreporting,usingdataandbenchmarks tomonitor attainmentandprogress,in everychild’slearning
  • Using this datacontinuouslytosupportand improve standards
  • Ensuring thatthehealthand wellbeingof children isencouraged through a nurturingenvironment.
  • Promoting equality andinclusion inallaspectsofschoollife
  • Ensuring that therequirementsof theCodeofPractice aremet.
  • Ensuring thatproperstandards of behaviorareimplemented
  • Making suchmeasuresgenerally known withinthe school
  • Ensuring themaintenanceof goodorderand disciplineat alltimesduring theschooldaywhenpupils are present ontheschoolpremisesandwheneverthe pupils areengagedinauthorizedschoolactivities,whetherontheschoolpremisesorelsewhere.

  • Making arrangementsforparents/guardianstobegiven regularinformation abouttheschoolcurriculum,theprogressoftheirchildrenand other mattersaffecting theschool,so astopromotecommon understanding of its aims
  • Creating andmaintaining aneffectivepartnershipwith parents/guardianstosupportandimprove

pupils’achievement and personal development.

  • Workingwith parents/guardians to ensurechildren haveaccesstoextended services,extra-curricular opportunities,homeworkandothersocialand educationalexperiences,e.g. throughthe ParentStaff Association.
  • Attending meetingsofthe governing board andmakingreportsto them in connectionwithhis/herresponsibilities asthey mayproperlyrequire eitherona regularbasisor fromtime totime
  • Advising andassisting thegoverning boardofthe school intheexerciseof theirfunctions(withoutprejudiceto anyrightss/hemayhave asa governorof theschool)
  • Advising thegoverning boardontheadoptionofeffectiveprocedurestodealwithincompetentteachers, andkeeping the governing boardinformedofthegeneraloperationof such procedures
  • Reportingto thegoverningboardontheprofessionaldevelopmentofallstaffat the school.
  • Liaisingand co-operation with theofficers ofthemaintainingauthority.
  • Maintaining liaisonwithotherschoolsand educationestablishmentswithwhichthe schoolhasa relationship.
  • Allocating,controlling andaccountingforthosefinancial and material resourcesof theschoolwhichare underthe control ofthehead teacher
  • Adhering to financialregulations.
  • Making arrangementsforthesecurity,maintenance,development andeffectivesupervision ofthe schoolbuildings and theircontentsandoftheschoolgrounds,andensuring(if sorequired)thatany lackofmaintenance is promptlyreportedtothemaintainingauthorityor, ifappropriate,the governingbody.
  • Arranging for a DeputyHeadteacherorothersuitableperson toassumeresponsibilityforthefunctionsof theHeadteacher at anytime whens/he is absentfromtheschool.
  • Safeguarding andpromoting thewelfareofchildren and youngpersons s/heis responsiblefororcomesinto contactwith.
  • Ensuring thehealthandsafetyofall children,staff, parents/guardiansandvisitors.
