BEDFORD CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT PHILOSOPHY

The purpose of the Bedford City School District is to provide opportunities for the development of each child to the highest level of his/her maturity in order to assist him/her in becoming a creative force in our democratic society.

This statement of purpose suggests several basic provisions:

  1. The educational program assists the pupil to achieve and maintain sound mental and physical health.
  1. Personal and social relationships are encouraged in order to strengthen the moral values essential for the preservation and improvement of our democracy.
  1. Situations are provided which give the pupil opportunities to develop logical thinking and effective communications.

The pupil is assisted not only in preparing for further education, but also in acquiring those knowledges, skills, and interests necessary for vocational success and the intelligent use of leisure time. This includes the development of an appreciation of aesthetic values in all aspects of daily living.

Ninth Grade Physical Education Course of Study

INTRODUCTION

The Physical Education curriculum facilitates the development of cognitive skills through motor activities and provides a means for learning classroom content through the kinesthetic modality. Integration of academic content standards with physical education curriculum is included in this course of study. This curriculum document is adaptable to a wide range of teaching and learning styles.

PHILOSOPHY

Physical education at the high school level provides each student with the tools necessary to make worthy use of leisure time and maintain a level of fitness to function effectively in society. These components will help meet the immediate and long range needs and interests of the individual students regardless of mental and physical abilities.

Continuous evaluation of the Physical Education program should be ongoing to meet the physical, mental, social, and emotional needs of students in the new millennium. The goal of achieving a lifestyle of total wellness is paramount in our ever-changing society.

BENCHMARKS/PERFORMANCE INDICATORS

Standards for students taking physical education courses are:

Standard #1: Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns

needed to perform in a variety of physical activities.

Benchmarks:

The students will:

  1. Become intelligent spectators
  2. Understand rules and regulations as they apply to activities involved

Standard #2: Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles,

strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities

Benchmarks:

The students will:

  1. Identify and apply principles of practice and conditioning that enhance performance
  2. Demonstrate competence (basic skills, strategies, rules) in a variety of team and individual activities

Standard #3: Participates regularly in physical activity

Benchmarks:

The students will:

  1. Develop skills and gain knowledge for maintaining physical activity for living
  2. Acquire enthusiasm, skills, and rich resources for leisure time activities
  3. Identify opportunities in the school and community for regular participation in physical activity

GRADE 9-12 FOCUS

In Ninth Grade Physical Education we emphasize proficiency in one or more activities that lead to achievement of personal goals for lifetime fitness and leisure. Students have a personal choice in one or more of the following areas: lifetime or individual activities, team sports and total fitness, and swimming. Each area is student-centered, offering instruction based on individual need, skills, and abilities. Integration with other academic areas also allows additional modalities for learning for the physical education student.

  5. Properly remove and retrieve arrows following a shooting session
  6. Successfully target shoot from varying distances
  7. Track and maintain score while shooting.

  1. Demonstrate the proper techniques for the various strokes used in the game of badminton

  5. Pass a skills test on the proper techniques of the game of badminton

  2. Demonstrate the proper stance and footwork to release a bowling ball

  5. Demonstrate how to keep score during gameplay.

Performance Objectives:

The student should be able to:

  1. Position hands accurately when gripping each club
  2. Make contact with ball when swinging woods and irons
  3. Demonstrate the correct stance for each club when addressing the ball
  4. Make club selections in terms of distance, ball location, and desired outcome
  5. Use correct procedures and etiquette when playing on a golf course
  6. Understand different terminology used for the game of golf.

Performance Objectives:

The student should be able to:

  1. Explain the difference between the Eastern and Western grip
  2. Explain the purposes of the different strokes used in a game
  3. Demonstrate the proper grip and stance for the forehand and back hand strokes
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of strategy and court positioning in a game situation
  5. Demonstrate the proper technique for serving and perform the serve in a test with at least 50% efficiency
  6. Understand the scoring system used in tennis (Game, Set, Match).
  7. Pass a written exam on tennis rules and scoring

1.Understand the game of disc golf, including the equipment used, and terminology/ scoring for game play.

2.Demonstrate proper grip, backhand throw, sidearm throw, and overhand throw techniques.

  4. Explain at least 3 safety precautions for the game of basketball
  5. Differentiate between a zone and person-to-person defense
  6. Understand the rules of the game of basketball

  3. Demonstrate the ability to control your stick
  4. Have a working knowledge of offensive and defensive tactics
  5. Understand the rules and scoring of a floor/field hockey game

Fitness Testing

Students will be assessed 3 times during the year long freshman physical education course on various levels of fitness. The fitness test has been designed with our students’ specific needs in mind. The five components of fitness will be evaluated: cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and body composition.
