Becoming a Marine Invertebrate/Vertebrate Phylum Expert
Marine Biology Research Project and Presentation
Objectives:
a) Discover a great deal about a single marine invertebrate or vertebrate phylum or class.
b) Become aware of the diversity and uniqueness of a single phylum/class.
c) Understand the features that identify an organism in particular phyla of the Animal Kingdom.
d) Present your information to your classmates.
e) Obtain information about different marine Phyla from your classmates.
Product:
Create a power point or prezi on your research to present to the class.
Procedure:
1. Research a single marine invertebrate phylum or class and become the expert that the class turns to when questions about that phylum arise.
2. Start out your research by reading (and taking notes) on the corresponding pages in your text (hand-out Ch. 7) that discuss your Phylum/Class assigned to you.
3. Use the internet or library to further add information to your research and download pictures, diagrams, and charts for your power point presentation.
4. Create a detailed outline of your research that you will use in your presentation. Research, and consequently your power point, will include:
a. representative organisms,
b. specific attributes that classify them as such,
c. A general description of the physiological systems and how they operate. Physiological systems may include:
1. Nervous system
2. Circulatory/Respiratory system
3. Reproductive system
4. Locomotion/Muscular system
5. Excretory/Osmoregulation system
6. Digestive system
5. See the rubric for specific facts that you will research and include in the outline and presentation.
6. Make a power point or other visual that illustrates the most important facts about the phylum. (Please see rubric on the next page)
7. When questions come up regarding this phylum/class, the phylum/class expert will answers questions or find out the answers to the questions.
8. Begin research tonight on your own from one of the phyla/classes listed on the back. (Pick from a hat) You will have 4 class periods in the computer room to aid in this assignment. The assignment in its entirety will be due on ______. Presentations will start on that day also.
