YOUNG ATHLETE VERSION – pg. 1

This event is for Young Athletes ages 5-7 ONLY. Young athletes who are ages 2-4 must participate in the foundational skills of the Young Athlete Program.

This event consists of three events: target pass, speed dribble and spot shot. For Young Athletes there is no score taken. The participants in this event will be performing the skills as a demonstration. In competition each player will perform each event twice. The participants receive 1 TOTAL medal (of all the same color) for their efforts in training and competition.

Individual Skills Event #1: TargetPass

  1. Equipment
  2. Two Size 5 (27.5 inch) Basketballs
  3. flat wall
  4. chalk or floor tape or cones
  5. measuring tape
  6. Description
  7. A 1 meter (3 feet 3 1/2 inches) square is marked on a wall using chalk or tape. The bottom line of the square shall be 1 meter (3 feet 3 1/2 inches) from the floor. A 3 meter (9 feet 9 inches) square will be marked with tape or by cones on the floor 2.4meters (7 feet) from the wall.
  8. The athlete must stand within the square.
  9. The athlete is given five passes.
  10. Emphasize
  11. Two handed “pass” to the center of the target.
  12. Step and push the ball.
  13. Hit the target without a bounce.

Event #2: Speed Dribble

  1. Equipment
  2. Measuring tape
  3. Floor tape or chalk
  4. OneSize 5 (27.5 inch) Basketball
  5. Stopwatch
  6. Whistle
  7. Set-up
  8. Mark a circle with a 1.5 meter (4 feet 11 inches) diameter.
  9. May also use an area similar to these dimensions.
  10. Rules
  11. Athlete may use only one hand to dribble.
  12. Athlete must either be standing or be sitting in a wheelchair or another type of chair with similar dimensions whilecompeting.
  13. Athlete starts and stops dribbling at the sound of the whistle.
  14. There is a 60-second time limit imposed. The objective is to dribble the ball as many times as possible during this period.
  15. Athlete must stay in the designated circle while dribbling.
  16. If the basketball rolls out of the circle, it may be handed back to the athlete, who continues to dribble.
  17. Emphasize
  18. Dribble with your fingers.
  19. Try to not watch the ball.
  20. Dribble with one hand.
  21. Rhythm.

Event #3: Spot Shot

  1. Equipment
  2. Two Size (27.5 inch) Basketballs
  3. Six Foot basket only
  4. Description
  5. Three spots are marked on the floor. Start each measurement from a spot on the floor under the front of the rim. The spots are all marked as follows:
  6. #1 = 1 meter in front of the center of the rim
  7. #2 =1.5 meter (4 feet11 inches) to the left of #1
  8. #3 =1.5 meter (4 feet11 inches) to the rightof #1
  9. The athlete attempts two field goals from each of six spots. The attempts are taken in any order.
  10. Emphasize
  11. Shoot over the front of rim.
  12. The ball should fly in an arc, like a rainbow.
  13. Use your legs.
  14. Shoot up and out.
