Basketball Individual Skills Contest
YOUNG ATHLETE VERSION – pg. 1
This event is for Young Athletes ages 5-7 ONLY. Young athletes who are ages 2-4 must participate in the foundational skills of the Young Athlete Program.
This event consists of three events: target pass, speed dribble and spot shot. For Young Athletes there is no score taken. The participants in this event will be performing the skills as a demonstration. In competition each player will perform each event twice. The participants receive 1 TOTAL medal (of all the same color) for their efforts in training and competition.
Individual Skills Event #1: TargetPass
- Equipment
- Two Size 5 (27.5 inch) Basketballs
- flat wall
- chalk or floor tape or cones
- measuring tape
- Description
- A 1 meter (3 feet 3 1/2 inches) square is marked on a wall using chalk or tape. The bottom line of the square shall be 1 meter (3 feet 3 1/2 inches) from the floor. A 3 meter (9 feet 9 inches) square will be marked with tape or by cones on the floor 2.4meters (7 feet) from the wall.
- The athlete must stand within the square.
- The athlete is given five passes.
- Emphasize
- Two handed “pass” to the center of the target.
- Step and push the ball.
- Hit the target without a bounce.

Event #2: Speed Dribble
- Equipment
- Measuring tape
- Floor tape or chalk
- OneSize 5 (27.5 inch) Basketball
- Stopwatch
- Whistle
- Set-up
- Mark a circle with a 1.5 meter (4 feet 11 inches) diameter.
- May also use an area similar to these dimensions.
- Rules
- Athlete may use only one hand to dribble.
- Athlete must either be standing or be sitting in a wheelchair or another type of chair with similar dimensions whilecompeting.
- Athlete starts and stops dribbling at the sound of the whistle.
- There is a 60-second time limit imposed. The objective is to dribble the ball as many times as possible during this period.
- Athlete must stay in the designated circle while dribbling.
- If the basketball rolls out of the circle, it may be handed back to the athlete, who continues to dribble.
- Emphasize
- Dribble with your fingers.
- Try to not watch the ball.
- Dribble with one hand.
- Rhythm.

Event #3: Spot Shot
- Equipment
- Two Size (27.5 inch) Basketballs
- Six Foot basket only
- Description
- Three spots are marked on the floor. Start each measurement from a spot on the floor under the front of the rim. The spots are all marked as follows:
- #1 = 1 meter in front of the center of the rim
- #2 =1.5 meter (4 feet11 inches) to the left of #1
- #3 =1.5 meter (4 feet11 inches) to the rightof #1
- The athlete attempts two field goals from each of six spots. The attempts are taken in any order.
- Emphasize
- Shoot over the front of rim.
- The ball should fly in an arc, like a rainbow.
- Use your legs.
- Shoot up and out.
