1. Basic Function and Scope.
-To evaluate work specifications, prepare information, man-hours, materials direct purchase requisitions, and inter-trade request.
-Ensure necessary information is passed to all relative personnel to ensure planning can be carried out.
-Act as progress evaluator reporting continually to respective Mechanical Section Head.
-Repair necessary work done reports and documentation for purpose of invoice preparation.
-Ensure records are maintained of all work done in accordance with the Company’s Quality System Procedures.
-When instructed take on duties of Mechanical Supervisor.
2. Work Performed.
-To make a detailed evaluation of repair specifications, itemising man-hour requirements and where necessary requisitioning of:
Materials
Inter-trade involvement
Direct purchases
Specialist involvement
-Assist the Marine Engineer / Section Head in the preparation of programmes.
-Issue inter-trade requests and follow up the progress of such assistance.
-Pass copies of Direct Purchase Requisitions to the Services Material Controller and Liase with him continually on progress of procurement.
-Prepare sketches, which can assist Supervisors/Mechanical Fitters in the interpretation and the execution of the work.
-Prepare material list necessary for the execution of the job, assure the availability of the materials either from the Warehouse or by direct purchase.
-Carry out on board/workshop inspection of the items to be repaired with the Mechanical Supervisor, Ship Repair Manager and Owner Representative.
-Regularly inspect the items being repaired in the Mechanical workshop / on board, or at any other site to record the details of the repair, take measurements, make sketches, and generally monitor progress.
-Receive equipment from on board and hand over to workshop Work Preparator with details of required repairs
-Update the repair programme, as well as report direct to respective Mechanical Section Head with problem areas, delays etc.
-Prepare detailed reports on all work done for purposes of preparing customers invoices.
-When requested undertake duties/responsibility of Mechanical Supervisor in addition to the foregoing duties.
-Maintain records / files on all work done.
3. Supervision Received.
-From respective Marine Engineer/Mechanical Section Head.
4. Supervision Exercised.
-When instructed to undertake additional duties of supervisor, then he operates with full responsibility and authority of the position.
5. Financial Responsibilities.
As a Work Preparator -
-Expenditure to levels pre-determined by Management.
-Has high level of responsibility as wrong or lack of information will lead to financial losses, e.g. purchasing items, ordering materials from stock, poor job description.
As an Acting Mechanical Supervisor -
-Ensure repairs are performed to an efficiently level to maximise profits.
6. Work Contacts.
-Work with Ship Owners Representatives, Ships Staff, Classification Surveyors, Ship Repair Managers, Descriptors, Invoicers, Estimators and Buyers.
7. Desired Requirements.
a) Education & Qualification.
Good Secondary education with high standard of written / spoken English language attained.
Further Technical education to minimum B. Tech. Part 1 standard or equivalent.
b) Skills & c) Related Experience.
Recognised mechanical apprenticeship followed by minimum Five years as Mechanical fitter in a Ship Repair Yard.
Proven experience as Work Preparator in Ship Repair Yard for Three years.
8. Physical Effort.
-Requires physical effort to access all areas of vessels up to 450,000 DWT.
9. Working Conditions / Hazards.
-Work on board under sometimes-adverse conditions, high temperatures, confined spaces and heights.
