The Riverdale Neighborhood House Youth Internship Program is a stipend-based paid internship. If you are a high school student between the ages of 14 and 18 looking to develop job skills, explore careers, and gain experiences that will boost your resume and/or college application then you are encouraged to apply. Selected interns participate in various activities to enhance their experience including career club, academic assistance, college information, health & mental health education, peer-to-peer education, trips, and year-end events.

Health, Education or Environment

A. Education Internship

1. Riverdale Neighborhood House

The Learn, Educate and Develop (L.E.A.D) internship at Riverdale Neighborhood House provides young people the opportunity to work side by side with teaching professionals in an after-school setting. Working with young children in a classroom and library setting, teens will have the chance to develop skills required for promoting literacy and learn classroom management skills. Interns work Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. for a total of 4hrs/week plus every other Friday from 4:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

B. Health Internship (2 sites)

1. Hudson Pointe at Riverdale, Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation

This health internship offers young people an opportunity to intern in a nursing care facility working with the elderly. Interns will work alongside health care professionals to learn about the career and develop the skills to care for the residents. In addition, interns will provide seniors with companionship while participating in various social and recreational activities. Work days are to be determined, but interns will work a total of 4hrs/week plus every other Friday from 4:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Interns must be 16 years old or older and will need a PPDandMMR vaccine to intern at this site.

2. Hebrew Home for the Aged at Riverdale

The health internship offers young people an opportunity to intern in a nursing care facility working with the elderly. C. Environmental Internship

Friends of Van Cortlandt Park

The Environmental Internship is a fun and rewarding experience that connects youth to the environment and their community. As an intern, you will participate in projects that will require you to work both indoors and outdoors alongside environmentalists. Interns will learn about gardening and composting, how to restore and maintain natural areas in the park, and will create community service projects. This internship requires working outdoors, physical activity and “getting your hands dirty.” Interns work every Friday from 4:30-6:00p.m. and alternate scheduled Saturdays from 9:30 a.m.- 2:30p.m.

A. New York Public Library Internship

Riverdale Branch Library

The Riverdale Branch of The New York Public Library has served its community since1967. Aside from the collection of books they offer to adults, adolescents and children, the Riverdale Branch Library also provides weekly events for all ages. As alibrary intern you will have the opportunity to assist staff with administrative and programmatic responsibilities. The intern will learn about collection management - an essential component of managing the library, while also learning about marketing and implementing teen related activities for the library. Interns work Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. for a total of 4hrs/week plus monthly Friday meetings. .*days and times are subject to change

B. Media and Broadcasting Internship

BronxNet

BronxNet, located on the Lehman College campus, is home to the Bronx’s only public access television station and offers diverse programming showcasing the Bronx. Interns will get a behind-the-scenes look on how a television station operates and of the various careers in this field. Teens will learn about studio production, editing, and camera operation as they create their own field-production packages that will be broadcasted at the Open 2.0 show; a show created by teens for teens. This internship is for a motivated, hands-on, and creative teen that wants to expand their knowledge about media and broadcasting. Interns work Mondays and Wednesdays 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. for a total of 4hrs/week plus monthly Friday meetings.

C. Bronx Community Board Administrative Internship

Bronx Community Board No. 8

Bronx Community Board No. 8 plays an integral role in working with the Northwest Bronx community advocating and resolving issues relating to a community’s health, safety and welfare. As an intern, you will provide administrative support to the District Manager on a variety of community projects. In addition to learning about and advocating for different community based services you will become politically acumen as you learn about your local government. This is an excellent opportunity to improve written and verbal communication, customer service and administrative skills. Intern works Tuesdays and Thursdays 3:00- 5:00 p.m. for a total of 4hrs/week plus monthly Friday meetings.*days and times are subject to change

D. Real Estate Internship

Susan Goldy Team at Halstead Property

Located in the heart of Riverdale, the Susan Goldy Team specializes in house sales and apartment rentals. The position exposes interns to real estate sales, mortgage services and operating a business. This new program combines entry-level administrative duties with the opportunity to learn about how to sell and market residential properties. This is a great position for a young person who is computer literate and enjoys customer service. Work days to be determined, but interns will work a total of 4hrs/week plus monthly Friday meetings.

E. Teen Activity Specialist

Riverdale Neighborhood House

The RNH AfterSchool Program (ASP) offers care for children ages 5 to 12 in our “just like home” facility. As a Teen Activity Specialist, you will conduct recreational activities in our ASP. Intern/s will organize, promote and lead activities, such as arts and crafts, sports, games, music, dramatics, social recreation, and hobbies, taking into account the needs and interests of individual members. This internship is for teens who want to further develop their hobby or talent. Intern/s must be comfortable working independently and leading a group. . Work days to be determined, but interns will work a total of 4hrs/week plus monthly Friday meetings.

F. Journalism Internship

Norwood News (located at 3400 Reservoir Oval, Bronx, NY 10467)

The Norwood News is a non-profit newspaper that serves the northwest Bronx and provides a voice for the community. A journalism internship at the Norwood News is an excellent opportunity to learn about the newspaper business and how to become a good journalist. Interns will work on real news stories by doing research and fact checking. They will also learn about copy-editing, photography, ad sales, design and perform invaluable administrative work. This internship is for a teen that is interested in writing, learning about journalism and wants to help provide a crucial service to the community. Work days to be determined, but interns will work a total of 4hrs/week plus monthly Friday meetings.

G. Event Planning Internship

Amalgamated Housing Cooperative (located at 98 Van Cortlandt Park South, Bronx, NY 10463)

The Amalgamated Housing Cooperative provides housing and a strong community for people of moderate income. This internship focuses on the social and recreational activities provided by the Amalgamated Housing Cooperative. An intern will work with the Education Director to help create flyers for community events, and learn and participate in outreach projects as well as perform different administrative duties. This internship is ideal for a young person who is creative, sociable and has good organizational skills. Work days are to be determined, but interns will work a total of 4hrs/week plus attend monthly Friday meetings.

H. Educational Group Leader Assistant

The SMART Program at In-Tech Academy (M.S. 368) (located at 2975 Tibbet Avenue)

SMART stands for science, math, art and reading through technology. It is an after school program for middle school youth to engage them and help them develop their academic, social and emotional competencies. As anintern, you will assist in various activities including games, sport activities and homework help. This internship is ideal for a teen that is comfortable working with 6th, 7th and 8th graders. Interns work Mondays and Wednesdays 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. for a total of 4hrs/week plus attend monthly Friday meetings. *days and times are subject to change
