Overview

The Bijou Film Board (BFB) is a recognized student organization of the University of Iowa. The purpose of the BFB is to enable significant student involvement and leadership within FilmScene – a mission-driven, nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching the cultural vitality of the Iowa City area through film programming that challenges, inspires, educates, and entertains. To this end, the BFB advises and assists FilmScene with its overall mission and with the operation of a full-time cinema in downtown Iowa City.

The BFB consists of volunteer Board members, student projectionists, two student Managers (Marketing, Finance & Operations) and two student Directors (Executive, Programming).

Summary

The BFB Programming Director shares equal power with the BFB Executive Director. In general, the Programming Director is in charge of day-to-day programming operations and film management, but there are many diverse aspects to the job. A flexible attitude and a diverse set of skills are required. An active working relationship will be maintained with Andy Brodie, Programming Director of FilmScene and Joe Tiefenthaler, Executive Director of FilmScene.

Applicants must be full-time students at the University of Iowa. The position comes with a $5,750 annual stipend.

Job Duties for Bijou Film Board Programming Director (Complete overview in FilmScene / BFB bylaws)

a. Keeps current on available films and manages outside requests and information.

b. Compiles research materials as board members pitch films (monthly) and oversees film selection process for Bijou film series.

c. Contacts distributors, confirms booking details, confirms contractual arrangements, and creates and sends box office reports.

d. Follows up on payments (working with SOBO office) and deals with cancellations and other emergencies.

e. Compiles film descriptions for Bijou and FilmScene marketing materials (including Bijou and FilmScene websites, Facebook, InFocus, flyers, table tents, etc.).

f. Serves as key contact with film distributors, confirms dates and advertising materials, establishes all contracts with outside designers/advertisers, and ensures payment of bills.

g. Assists in overseeing the BFB in cooperation with the BFB Executive Director.

h. Attends FilmScene Board and subcommittee meetings and participates as a voting member.

i. Proofs the marketing material used to promote films in collaboration with IMU Marketing and Design, as well as Andrew Sherburne (FilmScene Marketing Director).

j. Other additional duties determined by the BFB and FilmScene Executive Committee.
