ASSA ABLOY provides greater building security and extra convenience

AperioTM Technology provides inexpensive expansion of access control systems

Herlev, July, 2012 – ASSA ABLOY’s AperioTM Technology now enables a wide range of access control providers to cost-effectively integrate non-wired doors with mechanical locks into access control systems. As a result, IT, Security and Facility Managers now have greater control, can easily respond to organisational changes and will only need to monitor a single security system, while users will only require a single RFID access control card.

An access control system is standard equipment for companies and public administrations and provides buildings with a very high standard of security. However, retrofitting access control doors is very expensive due to the extensive wiring involved. This is why access control systems often only integrate doors with very high security requirements. All other doors feature mechanical locks.Such doors cannot be monitored online and the locking cylinder usually needs to be replaced when a key is lost. This means that security officers do not have full control over access and are also burdened with laborious administrative tasks. This is where AperioTM Technology comes in.Thanks to its innovative radio technology, mechanical doors can now be integrated into new or existing access control systems using an online, secure wireless solution.

“Fitting a door with AperioTM Technology is far more cost-effective than an electronic, wired solution. Structural alterations to the door are not necessary,” explains ASSA ABLOY Business Unite Leader Jens Møller.“The maintenance and energy costs are also low in comparison to wired access control doors.”There is generally no need to replace existing RFID cards or transponders as these can also be used for AperioTM doors.AperioTM supports the standard RFID technologies iCLASS®, MIFARE™ and MIFARE™ DESFire™– Low Frequency (HID PROX, EM410x) and LEGIC® Advant are also in the pipeline.

If a user requires access to a room which is secured online with AperioTM, the electronic cylinder or other type of door fitting transmits their RFID card data via encrypted wireless signal to a nearby Aperio™ communications hub, and hubs are able to manage up to 8 doors each so adding to the efficiency of the solution. In a matter of moments, the hub then contacts the access control system via an encrypted serial link to verify whether the medium is authorised for access or not. There is generally no need to replace the existing RFID cards or transponders as these can also be used for AperioTM doors.

“ASSA ABLOY has developed AperioTM Technology to meet the growing need for security and control.Until now, the options for upgrading access control systems were expensive and, consequently, severely limited. With AperioTM, we are now able to offer an inexpensive alternative on the global market in cooperation with manufacturers and system integrators of access control systems, in fact over 90 leading access control OEM’s already support Aperio and the number continues to grow” explains Chris Bone, ASSA ABLOY Vice-President Access Control EMEA.

Incorporating non-wired AperioTM doors into access control systems has provided IT managers and security officers with a comprehensive range of control options.Access authorisations can be issued or deleted online and in real time.“Any missing access cards are simply cancelled.Room access events are also logged in precise detail,” explains Jens Møller.AperioTM monitors doors using the software for the existing access control system. This means that facility managers will now only need to manage a single security system for all their RFID access controlled doors.

Since AperioTM Technology is based on an open standard, it can be integrated into all access control systems made by any manufacturer. You can find further information and references at
