Course: AEC 115, Introduction to Architecture

Credits: 2 credits lecture/lab

Course Description:

This course is designed for students interested in the architectural field. Overview of the architectural profession to include professional ethics, industry organizational structure, licensing and its educational requirements, typical framework of architectural firms, compensation, model codes, awarding of contracts and legal requirements for construction projects, project administration, professional organizations and career opportunities in related fields. We will look at the work of significant architects and the importance of the creative thinking process and its application to basic design theory.

A reference binder will be developed and kept by each student. A sketchbook for recording and sketching architectural objects in the field will be used.

Pre-requisite:

Placement in ENG 20R or in ESL 9.

Recommended:

Placement in Eng 22 and keyboarding skills, access to a computer with internet.

Course Objectives:

1.  To introduce the students to the industry structure.

2.  To introduce students to the various professions in the industry.

3.  To introduce students to State of Hawaii licensing requirements.

4.  To introduce students to positions within an architectural firm.

5.  To introduce students to model codes and contract types.

6. To expose students to working in group collaborations.

7.  To help students understand legal implications, responsibilities of the

profession and professional ethics.

8. To become familiar with professional organizations and career opportunities.

9. To introduce students to the works of significant architects.

10. To emphasize the importance of creative thinking in the architectural process and how that is documented.

Evaluation:

1. Assignments: 50% (no credit for late assignments,

90% to be submitted by email attachments.

10% min. will be collected by AEC Department instructor

for submittal to Course instructor.)

2. Exams: 30% (mid term and final are open binder exams)

both exams will be proctored.

3. Research Paper 10% (required to pass this course)

4. Attendance: 10% (attendance to every class meeting is

mandatory. An online sign-in plus in-class sign-in sheet will be standard practice each class day.)

Standard grading scale: 90-100 = A, 80-89=B, 70-79=C, 60-69=D, <60=F

Method of Instruction:

On line assignments, individual and group projects, guest speakers.

Materials for this class:

1.  ONE – 2” course binder with a clear plastic cover.

3. Clear sheet protectors that will hold information in your reference

binder. 20 minimum. May share a 100 count box with class mates.

4. ONE – 8-1/2” x 11” sketchbook and drawing pencils - soft 2 HB HB.

Students will have access to the CAD Lab scanner (for submittal of work), and

a dedicated CAD Lab computer with internet capabilities for each student. For this course, students will also need the use of a personal digital camera or cell phone camera with upload capabilities.
