Air Pressure Lab Station # 1 (Ball & Straw)

I.  Procedure:

A.  All people from your group get one straw and one Styrofoam ball.

B.  Curve the straw so it looks like diagram # 1.

C.  Hold the ball over the curved end of the straw.

D.  Start blowing slow and steady from the straight end of the straw.

E.  As you start blowing leave go of the ball.

F.  As you blow you should be able to balance the ball in mid air.

II.  Questions:

1. Why does the ball stay in mid air when blowing into the straw?

2. Which person in your group could hold the ball in the air the longest?

Air Pressure Lab Station # 2 (Cards & Strips)

I.  Procedure:

A.  Everybody in your group grab 2 strips of paper.

B.  Hold them together, side by side.

C.  Blow down the middle of the two pieces of paper.

D.  Take note of what happens.

E.  Everybody in your group grab 1 index card.

F.  Place the card on the lab table so that it sits up on the legs.

G.  Try to flip the card over by blowing quick puffs of air under the card.

H.  Take note of what happens.

II.  Questions:

1.  What happens when you blow down the middle of the two strips of paper?

2.  What causes this to happen (Strips of paper)?

3.  What happens when you blow under the index card?

4.  What causes this to happen (Index Card)?

Air Pressure Lab Station # 3 (Spray Bottle)

I Procedure:

A. Everybody in your group take 2 pieces of straw, 1 long 1 short.

B. Fill a cup of water about ¾ of the way up with water.

C. Place the long straw into the water of the cup.

D. Hold the long straw right against the edge of the cup.

E. Take the other straw and blow straight across the opening of the straw in the water.

F. See if you can get the water to come out of the straw. (This is the same way that a spray bottle works.)

II. Questions:

1. If you got the water to come out why did it?

2. If the water did not come out what could have been a problem?
