CHM 605 Quiz 10 CRIB

Bus Quiz -- You may work together and be as noisy as you need to be.

1. (5 pt) What can you say about the performance of these gloves with hydrazine; which glove(s) is/are better, worse, can’t tell….

All four are excellent against degradation, and three of the four gloves experienced NO permeation even after 8 hours. The one glove that had permeation, at 218 minutes, would be considered the poorest performer. The other three cannot be distinguished in any way from each other.

2. (3 pt) Do you think these gloves above are disposable or non-disposable (re-usable)? Why?

These are probably NOT disposable gloves. Disposable gloves generally do not stand up to 8-h permeation tests like this. (But some do, with some chemicals.) BTW, hydrazine is

From a 2007 Fisher MSDS:

Appearance: colorless liquid. Flash Point: 38 deg C. Danger! Strong reducing agent. Fire and explosion risk in contact with oxidizing agents. May be fatal if absorbed through the skin. Causes eye and skin burns. Causes digestive and respiratory tract burns. Flammable liquid and vapor. Harmful if inhaled or swallowed. May cause allergic skin reaction. Cancer suspect agent. May cause blood abnormalities. May cause liver and kidney damage. Target Organs: Blood, kidneys, liver.

(1 pt each, circle T (true) or F (false). These refer to your graduate school position as TA or RA

T F 3. You are required to fight a small fire if you started it.

T F 4. You are required to fight a small fire if there is an appropriate extinguisher near by.

T F 5. Fire extinguishers are required in every lab. We will give a point for either answer…

T F 6. Fire extinguishers are placed in the buildings and rooms for use by "trained individuals." (i.e. they are not for use by not-trained individuals.)

T F 7. Your employer can discipline you for using an extinguisher if you are not trained.

T F 8. Hostile fires often grow and spread far faster than people think.

T F 9. Flames do not require solid or liquid fuel to spread from room to room because gases generated by the materials already burning can spread the flames.

As regards numbers in the NFPA diamond symbol:

0 represents not harmful, 4 represents the most harmful potential

left/blue = health top/red = flammability right/yellow = reactivity

HMIS labels use same numbering scheme, and numbers are often identical. The health/fire/reactivity is from top to bottom.

10. (4 pt) Draw lines from left to right to match the four substance names to the labels set you believe is its HMIS and NPFA labels. (The PPE and special characteristics are intentionally left blank in these labels.
