Presents

Firefighter!

Actors: Narrator, Chief Miller, Liz, Dan, Anthony

Narrator: It is busy at the fire station even when there is no fire.

Liz: My name is Liz. I am checking the hoses. I want to make sure they screw tightly to the truck.

Dan: My name is Dan. I am another fireman, and I am polishing the fire truck wheels.

Anthony: I am Anthony. I’m upstairs in the kitchen, looking for a snack. I am always hungry!

Narrator: Suddenly they all hear a loud noise that

makes them jump.

All: Ring! Ring! Ring!

Narrator: It is the fire alarm!

Anthony: I slide down the pole.

All: THUD!

Anthony: I land hard. But the thick rubber pad on the ground cushions my feet.

Liz: I jump into my boots and pull up my fireproof pants. I check the computer. It shows the fire is at 7 Oak Lane. I grab the walkie-talkie and yell, “Chief Miller! We’re on our way!”

Chief Miller: “Right! I’ll meet you there!”

Narrator: Chief Miller had gone ahead in a special fast car.

Liz: I start the engine as the firefighters jump in. I flip on the sirens and lights and drive out of the fire house.

Dan: Liz speeds toward the fire.

Anthony: Cars and buses stop and wait when they hear the siren coming.

Narrator: The fire chief calls Liz.

Chief Miller: I’m at the fire scene. It’s an old house that’s been empty for years. But someone saw a young boy playing on the porch this morning. He might be inside the house. Tell Dan and Anthony to get their air tanks ready.

Liz: Okay Chief. I can see the smoke from here.

We’ll be there in two minutes.

Dan: Liz turns the corner into Oak Lane. Flames cover the top of the house.

Narrator: The fire is spreading quickly. There’s no time to lose!

Liz: I hook a hose from the truck to the nearest fire hydrant.

Anthony: Liz and another firefighter point the hose at the flames.

Liz: Ready!

All: WHOOSH!

Narrator: They hold on tight as the water

shoots out. It comes out of the fire hose hard

enough to knock a person down.

Dan: Anthony and I are ready to search the

burning building.

Anthony: We have put on our air tanks and face masks. Each of the tanks holds 40 minutes of air.

Chief Miller: I tell Anthony and Dan that the boy’s name is Luke.

Anthony: “Right!” I yell back at the Chief. I grab a hose.

Dan: I tell Anthony that we need to put the wet stuff on the red stuff!

Narrator: Dan and Anthony run to the back of the house. The fire is not as bad there.

Anthony: Dan feels the back door. If it is hot, flames could leap out. Dan yells out to me,

Dan: It’s cold!

Anthony: We go inside.

Narrator: Thick black smoke is everywhere.

Anthony: I shine my flashlight around and yell out Luke’s name several times. “Luke, Luke!” No one answers. Dan yells at me,

Dan: I can hear fire upstairs!

Narrator: The fire has damaged the staircase. It could fall down at any time.

Dan: We climb up the steps very slowly.

Liz: Outside, the outriggers are set down

on the ground. Outriggers are like legs.

They keep the truck steady as the ladder is raised.

Chief Miller: The ladder goes up like a telescope to the top of the house. A hose runs up the side.

Liz: The firefighter on the ladder shoots water down on the fire. The flames crackle and hiss.

Chief Miller: They get smaller, and then suddenly jump even higher.

Narrator: Inside the house, the fire rages. It is hot enough to melt glass.

Dan: Anthony sprays water on the flames. Fire has made the house weak.

Anthony: I hear Dan yelling to me.

Dan: It could come down any second. We must find Luke.

All: BOOM!

Narrator: A beam crashes down near them. But their helmets protect their heads.

All: CRASH!

Anthony: Quick! We’re running

out of time!

Dan: We came to another door.

But it wouldn’t open. I swing my ax

at the door. Once. Twice. Three

times.

Anthony: Dan yells at me that it is jammed.

Dan: The roar of the fire is so loud that we can hardly hear. Anthony yells at me,

Anthony: We’ll have to use the electric saw!

Narrator: Anthony switches on the saw.

All: WHIRRR!

Anthony: I cut a hole in the door big enough to climb through. Dan yells,

Dan: Luke! Luke? The room is empty.

Narrator: Suddenly the Chief calls out,

Chief Miller: Get out now!

The roof is coming down!

Narrator: Dan and Anthony race downstairs.

Dan and Anthony: We go out just as the roof fell in.

Narrator: Dan yells out,

Dan: We didn’t find Luke!

Chief Miller: He’s okay. We just found him up the block.

Dan: Whew! Good news!

Liz: Hours later the flames are out.

Anthony: I spray water on the parts still glowing red. I am tired and dirty – and very hungry!

Liz: I wind the hoses back on to the truck. I finally get to rest. I am tired too.

Narrator: Back at the station.

Anthony: At last, I finally get to sit down to eat.

Narrator: Suddenly a loud noise makes him jump!

Liz: I hear Dan yell out to Anthony laughing.

Dan: Dinner will have to wait!

All: Ring! Ring! Ring!

Chief Miller: Practice E.D.I.T.H. – Exit Drills in the Home. Do you know what to do if a fire starts in your home? Don’t wait until it happens.

Liz: Sit down with your family now.

Dan: Talk about how you would get out of the house.

Anthony: Plan at least two ways out of every room.

Narrator: Decide where you will all meet once you get outside.

All: A fire drill now could save lives later!
