Accreditation of APJA Judges Quick Guide

In conjunction with its training program the APJA accredits judges to determine levels of competency. Judges are invited to apply for any of the levels as noted below. Prior learning, which may include other aspects beyond those noted below, shall be taken into consideration when applications are received. Assessment criteria apply to all levels at Licentiate and above.

If you are considering being a judge of photography then the following questions will help you determine where you are in relation to the accredited levels.

Accredited Levels

Novice (Level 1)

There are no assessment criteria for this level other than completing the module topics for entry Novice Level 1.

Level 1 Questions

  • Have attended an 'Introduction to Judging Workshop'.

  • Have been a proven practicing photographer for at least three years.

  • Have gained at least ten awards at club competition level or at least ten acceptances at National/International level.

IAPJA - APJA Intern (Level 2)

There are no assessment criteria for this level other than completing the module topics for entry Novice Level 1 and Intern Level 2.

Level 2 Questions

  • Have attended an 'Intern Training Seminar'.

  • Have conducted 5 club judgings.

  • Have judged club photography competitions for at least one year.

  • Have been mentored during this year.

LAPJA - APJA Licentiate (Level 3)

Applicants for this level shall be assessed and to help those applying then the following questions should be asked of oneself.

Assessment criteria: To achieve this level applicants will be assessed based upon experience, application of training module topics and appraisal by the APJA committee.

Level 3 Questions

  • Have attended a 'Licentiate Training Seminar'.

  • Have judged 15 club competitions.

  • Have been judging club photography competitions for at least two years.

  • Have constructed and presented at least two different photography presentations at photography clubs.

  • Have shadow judged at least four times during the mentor program.

  • Have attended at least four photographic exhibitions (Gallery, Salon etc.).

  • Have researched the work of at least two internationally known photographers.

AAPJA - APJA Associate (Level 4)

Assessment criteria: To achieve this level applicants will be assessed based upon experience, application of module training topics and appraisal by the APJA committee. Prior learning consisting of a Certificate Course at TAFE may be considered as an alternative accreditation for this level.

Level 4 Questions

  • Have attended an 'Associate Training Seminar'.

  • Have judged at least 30 photography club competitions.

  • Have been judging club photography competitions over at least three years.

  • Have constructed and presented at least five different photography presentations at photography clubs.

  • Have attended at least 15 different photographic exhibitions (Gallery, Salon etc.).

  • Have researched the work of at least 5 different internationally known photographers.

  • Have judged at least two photography Interclub competitions.

  • Have mentored at least two Intern judges.

  • Have judged in at least two National photography competitions recognised by APS (not a pre-requisite but looked upon favourably).

FAPJA - APJA Fellow (Level 5)

Assessment criteria: To achieve this level applicants will be assessed based upon experience, application of module training topics and appraisal by the APJA committee. Prior learning consisting of a Degree Course in Photography may be considered as an alternative accreditation for this level.

Level 5 Questions

  • Have attended an 'Fellow Training Seminar'.

  • Have judged at least 90 photography club competitions.

  • Have been judging club photography competitions over at least 7 years.

  • Have constructed and presented at least 15 different photography presentations at photography clubs.

  • Have attended at least 30 photographic exhibitions (Gallery, Salon etc.).

  • Have researched the work of at least 15 internationally known photographers.

  • Have judged in at least four photography Interclub competitions.

  • Have mentored at least four Intern Judges.

  • Have judged in at least four National photography competitions and/or two International photography competitions recognised by APS (not a pre-requisite but looked upon favourably).

MAPJA - APJA Master (Level 6)

Assessment criteria: To achieve this level applicants will be assessed based upon experience, application of module training topics and appraisal by the APJA committee. Prior learning consisting of a Post-graduate Degree Course in Photography may be considered as an alternative accreditation for this level.

Level 6 Questions:

  • Have attended a 'Master Training Seminar'.

  • Have judged at least 150 photography club competitions.

  • Have been judging club photography competitions over at least 12 years.

  • Have constructed and presented at least 20 different photography presentations at photography clubs.

  • Have attended at least 60 photographic exhibitions (Gallery, Salon etc.).

  • Have researched the work of at least 30 internationally known photographers.

  • Have judged in at least 10 Interclub photographic competitions.

  • Have mentored at least 6 Intern Judges.

  • Have judged in at least 8 National photography competitions and/or four International photographic competitions recognised by APS (not a pre-requisite nut looked upon favourably).

Assessment

Satisfactory completion

The award of satisfactory completion for a level is based on a decision by the APJA Committee that the student has demonstrated achievement of the set of outcomes specified for the unit. This decision will be based on evaluation of the student’s performance on assessment tasks designated for the training modules.

Assessment tasks for these modules should allow students to demonstrate key knowledge and key skills across each module. All levels of achievement will be assessed from levels 3 to 6 inclusive. Levels of achievement:

Level 2 - Intern - Image Evaluation and Judging Credential (Not assessed)

Level 3 - Licentiate - Image Evaluation and Judging Credential

Level 4 - Associate - Image Evaluation and Judging Credential

Level 5 - Fellow - Image Evaluation and Judging Credential

Level 6 - Master - Image Evaluation and Judging Credential

Upon the satisfactory completion of all levels (Levels 3 to 6) each applicant will be provided with a certificate of achievement. Version 2: 10022016
