A RESOLUTION adjourning the Senate in honor of Harvey Granson Gaines, Jr., upon the occasion of his 101st birthday.

WHEREAS, Harvey Gaines, Jr., was born in Flat Creek, Kentucky, on March 24, 1913, the cherished son of the late Harvey and Sidney Harrod Gaines; and

WHEREAS, Harvey Gaines, Jr., was the loving husband of the late Evelyn Elizabeth Quire Gaines, who passed from this earthly life in 1982. Together the couple had two daughters, Wilma Gaines and her husband, Bobby, and Linda Ritchie and her husband, Stanley; two grandchildren, Meribeth Gaines and Stanley Ritchie, Jr., and his wife, Beth; and three great-grandsons, Ben, Jonathan, and Tony Ritchie; and

WHEREAS, Harvey Gaines, Jr., turns 101 years old on March 24, 2014, and this honorable body hereby commends him for a life well-lived, wishes him the best of luck as he continues his extraordinary journey on this earth, and honors him for all that he has done in service of his fellow man; and

WHEREAS, Harvey Gaines, Jr., was a longtime employee of the Franklin County School Board and a skilled farmer. A member, deacon, Sunday School superintendent, and church treasurer at Thornhill Baptist Church, he is an avid cook and food enthusiast who loves to cook for others. His recipes come from his Kentucky heritage and his childhood days growing up on a farm in the community of Flat Creek, and his generosity to others with this remarkable talent is beyond measure. Every Friday, his children and grandchildren gather around a 100-year-old oak table to share a meal, a simple yet profound tradition that illustrates Mr. Gaines' values and is a testament to his unwavering belief in family, food, and fellowship; and

WHEREAS, Harvey Gaines, Jr., is a lifelong resident of Frankfort, Kentucky. Renowned in the town as a man of immense wit and goodwill, he remains a foundation of his community and a treasure of this Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, Harvey Gaines, Jr., is hereby honored on his 101st birthday by this honorable body, who acknowledges the indelible mark he has left upon his family, his friends, and his community of Frankfort, and who rightfully applauds Mr. Gaines today for his humor, his passion for life, and his limitless kindness to others;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

âSection 1. The Senate hereby honors Harvey Granson Gaines, Jr., upon the occasion of his 101st birthday, and grants him best wishes as he continues his remarkable life of richness and grace.

âSection 2. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in honor of Harvey Granson Gaines, Jr.

âSection 3. The Clerk of the Senate is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Senator Julian Carroll for delivery.
