Adanac:

A Game of Strategy and Negotiation

Game Objective:

The objective of the game is to win points for your colony, increasing the number of points you started the game with.

  1. Together with your group, review your playing cards – this will help you to understand the language, politics, and culture of your colony, as well as how certain decisions will affect your colony’s point score.
  1. Assign a role to each group member:
  1. Chief Negotiator – You will take the main role in negotiations. You represent the members of your colony, and you must think about your colony’s best interests (point score) when you make decisions and agreements during negotiations.

Focus Question: How can I stay true to my colony’s policies, while still keeping our best interests at heart?

  1. Alternate – You will give the Negotiator advice, and replace them if they are absent. You will also be responsible for tracking negotiation information, and sharing this information with your colony members.

Focus Question: How can I stay true to my colony’s policies, while keeping our best interests at heart?

  1. Cartographer – You will create a map of your colony, which may include some following elements: rivers, lakes, mountains, farmland, seaports, urban centers, and a capital city. Be prepared to explain your map details to the other colonies.

Focus Question: How does this map reflect the general information about my colony?

  1. Herald – You will create the flag for your colony. When designing your flag, remember that your symbols and colours need to reflect your colony’s identity. Be prepared to explain your design choices to the other colonies.

Focus Question: How does this flag reflect my colony’s values and identity?

  1. Composer – You will direct the writing and lyrics of your colony’s national anthem. Anthems will be presented to the other colonies, so your group should rehearse your performance.

Focus Question: How does this anthem reflect my colony’s values and identity?

  1. Colony Historian – You will create a detailed history of the colony that reflects your colony’s geography, industry, and cultural identity.

Focus Question: How does this history reflect my colony’s values and identity?

*If there are 4 or 5 students in your group, then there will be ONE negotiator (completes the Chief Negotiator and Alternate roles). If there are only 3 to a group, then there would only be one negotiator, one student becomes both the Cartographer and the Herald, and one becomes the Composer and Historian.*

Session One

  1. All colony ambassadors will meet at the negotiation table; each Chief Negotiator states their colony’s position on each of the three issues (language, type of union, and railroad). No decisions about policies are made at this time. Alternates (or the Chief Negotiator, if there is no Alternate) listen and make notes about each colony’s policies. (10 minutes)
  2. Ambassadors return to their colony to discuss the colony’s position on the first policy: LANGUAGE. You and your colony members will decide whether or not to compromise on this issue. (10 minutes)
  1. Ambassadors return to the negotiation table to try to reach a TENTATIVE agreement on the language policy. There are two choices:
  2. Yellow will be made the only official language.
  3. Yellow and Purple will both be made official languages

(10-15 minutes)

* While the ambassadors are negotiating, the remaining members of your colony will work on their individual tasks (Cartographer, Composer, Herald).*

Sessions Two and Three

Repeat the format of Session One for the other two policies. Negotiations for the Type of Union and Railway policies will be conducted during seperate Negotiation Table discussions.

Session Four

You and your colony will share your national anthem, map, and flag with the other potential colonies of Adanac:

Each colony must perform their national anthem, as well as explain how their map, flag, and anthem reflect their colony’s identity.

You and your colony should review the FOCUS QUESTIONS for each role to help plan your brief presentation.

***If you and your fellow colonists believe that some of the tentative agreements need to be changed (to benefit your colony), you may conduct informal negotiations between Sessions 4 and 5.***

Session Five

  1. The final meeting will begin after all the policies have been discussed:
  2. Each Chief Negotiator will hold a vote in their respective colonies – Should we join Adanac?
  3. The moderator holds a FINAL VOTE with the Chief Negotiators, tallys the votes, and announces the results:

*If 4 or more colonies cannot reach agreement on the policies, the country of Adanac is not formed and each colony ends with the point score it started with.

*If agreement has been reached by 4 or more colonies on the three policies, the country of Adanac is formed, and the ambassadors return to their colonies for policy approval:

  1. The moderator will hold a final vote with the Chief Negotiators where they take a final position on each of the three policies; the moderator records the final positions on the Voting Register.
  2. The moderator will tally the final point scores.
  3. The moderator announces the winner of the game.
