Position Role:

The Vice Chancellor for Research (VCR) at Washington University (WU) is the chief University officer responsible for directing and guiding the University's research mission. The VCR oversees a research enterprise that generated $548 of research awards in FY08. Working closely with University Deans, department heads and senior faculty, the VCR supports faculty efforts to establish and grow their research programs by providing a faculty focused, integrated infrastructure that includes development and implementation of policies, grants and contracts management and effective compliance and education programs. The VCR also works closely with legislative bodies, external agencies, regulatory agencies, industry partners and research sponsors.

The Vice Chancellor for Research:

· Supports faculty efforts to conduct and report research through the development of policies, organizational support, and information technology;

· Promotes the ethical and responsible conduct of research, the protection of human and animal subjects, the stewardship of sponsored funds and compliance with federal, state and local guidelines, and University policies;

· Oversees the sponsored research administration offices of the University and Medical School;

· Serves as the institutional official for the Animal Care and Use Program and for the Human Research Protection Program;

· Serves as the primary Institution contact for the University’s Conflict of Interest policy;

· Functions as the Chief Research Integrity Officer and provides administrative support to the Committee on Research Integrity;

· Oversees patents and technology transfers arising from University investigator inventions;

· Oversees the Research Compliance Office and works closely with the University Compliance Office to resolve significant issues of noncompliance and reduce risk of future occurrences;

· Maintains appropriate accountability in managing research spending, in conjunction with the Vice Chancellor for Finance, to ensure financial compliance in sponsored projects;

· Represents the interests, activities and accomplishments of the University and its faculty to the community, sponsors, and legislative bodies; and

· Maintains accreditation and certifications.
