Team Leader Report Name: Carly Lauraine

Team leader reports are written to include information and costs for the entire duration of your time as team leader at a site, generally this will encompass more than one presentation.

Site: Brattleboro Senior Healthy Fair

Team Members: Tegan Bissel and Carly Lauraine

Date(s) of Presentation(s): 10/24/12

Presentation Title(s): “Calcium”

List the changes that were made to the site resource book: I updated the background knowledge of the Senior Center with contacts and hours of operation that they are open.

Include an overview of management responsibilities and skills practiced. How did you coordinate the services provided? (Include: roles & responsibilities of each team member, conducting the needs assessment, marketing, people & time management, the food activity, education materials, and gathering supplies.)

For this presentation, Tegan and split the duties equally. She was in charge of the handout creation for the audience and I was in charge of writing up the flip chart. We both researched the topic of Calcium that had been assigned to us and came up with the flow of how we wanted to present the information that we thought was important. We decided that the elderly population wouldn’t be interested in growing strong bones so we stressed maintaining bone density with calcium rich foods like milk products. WE added a snack of greek yogurt with a banana to emphasize how getting a serving of calcium is not difficult with yogurt and the banaan would aid in the bioavability of the calcium.

Since I was the TL and I live in Keene, I got the food letter and did the grocery shopping the day of the event, along with getting the handout printed.

On the Mind Tools website, review the sections on leadership styles http://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newLDR_84.htm. Describe the leadership style(s) that represent your work at this site and give examples. Briefly contrast your style with how another leadership style may have handled the supervision of the project.

I feel that I fall under this leadership style:

5. Democratic/Participative Leadership

Democratic leaders make the final decisions, but they include team members in the decision-making process. They encourage creativity, and team members are often highly engaged in projects and decisions

This leadership style might not have been the best way to handle this project because we did not go by the books and our presentation suffered because we didn’t know the answers to some simplistic questions. IN the future I will try to be a blend of all types of leaders.

Evaluate your leadership, the project’s teamwork, and outcome, including cost effectiveness. If presented with a similar project in the future, what might you change?

The leadership style I would change as I mentioned above to be more of a condensation of the styles. The overall presentation went well at the BSHF. The audience was very interested in the topic and we could tell because they were asking questions during the whole presentation, whether it had to do with the exact topic we were on or if it didn’t. For example a question came up that was asking whether supplements and whole foods could lead to a calcium toxicity. In future projects, we would have included some more information on the handout such as the RDA for calcium for older adults, and some serving sizes with the calcium amounts next to them, we would also source our resources on the handout and not have to tape them on at the last minute creating an eye-sore. We could have chosen a different food activity one with a less known source of calcium (other than yogurt) to show them that calcium can be found in a food that you wouldn't normally think of. We were trying to portray the concept of food pairing to increase calcium absportion, but if we had to do this again we might consider changing that. Also, it would have been easier to create the flip chart so we did not have to write on it during the presentation. It would have been easier for us to explain and for the audience to see if post it notes were created that were already written on and stick them to the board. We also did not have a sanitation/food safety component in the presentation, which would have been easy to incorporate with the food activity. The audience had a few members that were sneezing or coughing during the presentation, so we should have passed around some hand sanitizer before serving the snack to promote food safety. The ice breaker was effective in getting them to think about calcium, but we had trouble getting their attention to shift from the ice breaker to the presentation. Some of the audience members had trouble understanding the directions for the ice breaker, we could have stated an example of what we wanted before handing it out which might have helped.

For future interns participating in this project, we would recommend tabling in the morning of the health fair to get the audience thinking about calcium, so maybe there could have been a larger audience. Allow for time for garbage pick up of the food activity so that it is not an unexpected interruption in the presentation. Provide a snack that is non-dairy to show how there are other sources of calcium in non dairy foods and how to prepare them to be edible! Promote sustainable foods via Vermont Farmers locally, perhaps use a sample of their current in season foods as a food activity. Make sure that the flip has large enough font and pre-written on sticky notes so that attention is not lost when trying to write on the flip chart.
