WINTER 2006

Membership Versus Certification

We here at the Society of Asphalt Technologists (SAT) wanted to remind you that your membership in the SAT is a tremendous contribution to the industry. However, as a reminder, we wanted to clarify that SAT Membership is not the same as being SAT Certified as is specified in many of our state’s specifications. We also want to remind you that once you have been certified by one of our training classes, you must re-certify yourself every five years. Re-certification is required and you must submit a form (www.njsat.org) stating that you have had at least 4 hours of training each year.

New NAPA Book – Paving The Way: Asphalt in America

NAPA's new 304-page coffee-table book about hot-mix asphalt makes a great gift for anyone involved in the transportation industry. Paving the Way: Asphalt in America is a timely publication, as the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Interstate System approaches in 2006. This lavishly illustrated book was written by Dan McNichol, author of The Big Dig and The Roads That Built America, and was designed by Richard Berenson, who designed McNichol's earlier books. For a copy of the book, please visit: mix.org/asphalt_history_book.php

NJAPA’s Pavement Design Guide (2006 Edition)

The new NJAPA Hot Mix Asphalt Design Guide (2006 Edition) is completed and available for use. There was a lot of effort put into it by industry members and it was published in conjunction with the NJDOT. The book was designed to be a quick reference guide for local engineers who will be using the Superpave nomenclature. For your copy of the NJAPA Hot Mix Asphalt Design Guide, please contact the NJAPA offices at (732) 732-5664.

KRIS KOLLURI NAMED AS NEW NJDOT COMMISSIONER

Governor Jon S. Corzine named Kris Kolluri as Commissioner of Transportation. Kris Kolluri has been counsel at Parker McCay P.A. since January 2005 and is the firm's principal attorney for oversight of client matters pertaining to transportation law. Previously he served as Assistant Commissioner and Chief of Staff of the Department of Transportation. While there, he was chief counselor to Commissioner Jack Lettiere on all policy and administrative matters, and worked closely with the legislature to reform the Division of Motor Vehicles. Kolluri earned a Jurist Doctorate from Georgetown University, a Masters in International Business from Johns Hopkins University and Bachelor of Science from Rutgers University. He lives in West Windsor and is married with two children. We look forward to working with the new Commissioner.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Phil Cheney

I can’t believe that my tenure as president is almost over. It has been an amazing two years and I just want to thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve as your president. As I have mentioned before, the first year saw the development of a website (www.njsat.org) to help answer many of the frequently asked questions from both the industry and membership and promote continued growth of our organization.

As both our membership and participation in training programs grow we also look to increase the scholarship program to the maximum that the organization can afford. The scholarships are funded solely from the various fees collected through the year and supplemented by profits generated by the annual golf outing. Your participation over the past years had been greatly appreciated.

We want to remind our members that the annual Cap Livecchi Memorial Golf Outing will be held again at Farmstead Golf and Country Club in Andover, NJ on July 27, 2006. Forms will go out soon and be sure to check out the website for information. It was a great time last year, and we hope to see even more of you this year.

Our next membership meeting will be on April 19, 2006 at The Birchwood Manor in Whippany, New Jersey. Finally, from the SAT officers and board of directors, a most happy and safe summer paving season to you and your companies.
