Newsletter for April 2016

Welcome to the April newsletter, if you have access to the internet you might like to have a look at our website at www.sssg.co.uk which is updated monthly and has some photos of past events, as well as links to other stroke related websites for information and advice.

In March we met up at Quoys for a visit from Peter Johnson who played a DVD called" Following the trail of the herring" which marked the 100th anniversary of the Lerwick Mission (RNMDSF). His wife Christine also joined us for the evening and there was plenty time to chat over tea/coffee and homebakes at the end of the evening.

Next Event

Thursday 21st April at 7pm - We have booked a special evening meal at the Shetland Hotel in the St Catherine’s suite. Please phone Joy on 01595 696 491 or email her at by Tuesday 19th April to book your place at the meal and a menu has been included for your information. There will be a charge of £10 per person which will include the three course meal, tea/coffee and a drink on arrival.

Donations

We are very grateful to Maureen MacLeod for her amazing donation of £2,356 towards the Stroke Support Group funds. She raised the money by completing a 5 mile sponsored walk at the Clickimin running track last month, to celebrate her 70th birthday! Many thanks also to all who supported her and provided sponsorship for the event. We have booked Ben Mullay to take a photo of the cheque presentation, from Maureen to the Stroke Support Group, at the Shetland Hotel meal.

Communication Support Group

Anyone who has had problems with speaking after their stroke is welcome to come to the communication support group, and the next meeting will be on Thursday 28th of April from 2-3pm at the Lerwick Baptist Church at Quoys .

There will be tea/coffee and biscuits provided at each session and transport costs can be covered by the stroke support group if required.

Stroke Group Booklet

We are planning to have a small booklet printed with information about the Stroke Support Group to give to people who are newly diagnosed with stroke. Some group members have kindly offered to provide a short piece about their experiences after stroke, which they hope will be helpful to those just coming to terms with having had a stroke. If you would like to contribute to the booklet then please let us know.

Self Help for Stroke website

Selfhelp4stroke is a free self management website for anyone who has had a stroke, and can be found at www.Selfhelp4stroke.org. Selfhelp4stroke was written through the experiences of people that have had a stroke in Scotland. This is a free resource and the information is displayed in video, audio and interactive formats. Many of the resources are downloadable for you to use in your own time.
