COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course helps students become proficient in playing the piano. The course of study enables students to use musical language in reading and writing music, develops their abilities to comprehend harmonic structures, and encourages them to exercise their creativity through composing and performing music. In addition, students will become familiar with their musical heritage through the study of music history.

OUTCOMES:

·  Perform a varied repertoire of piano music

·  Read and notate music

·  Listen to, analyze, and describe music

·  Evaluate music and music performance

·  Gain a knowledge of music theory

·  Understand the development of Western music, beginning with the ancient Greeks to the present

EXPLANATION OF ASSESSMENT:

1.  Weekly playing tests will be administered.

2.  Students will play in two in-class recitals each month.

3.  Written quizzes and exams will be administered covering music theory and history.

4.  One research paper dealing with a topic in music history will be required.

REQUIRED MATERIALS

·  Pencil and Notebook paper

·  Three-ring binder

CLASSROOM REQUIREMENTS/PROCEDURES:

1.  The instructor, other students, and all equipment and materials will be treated with professionalism (courtesy and respect) at all times.

2.  Remain silent when the instructor is speaking

3.  A positive attitude is required at all times.

4.  Use the restroom before class begins.

5.  Food, drink, and gum are not permitted in class. Food or drink brought to class will be thrown away.

6.  Band equipment in the music room is off-limits.

7.  Be on time for class. This means being in the room before the bell rings.

8.  After school assistance is available everyday until 2:50. If extra time would be required, please make arrangements the day before.

HOMEWORK POLICY :

Homework is not a part of piano musicianship. It is expected that you will make proper use of your individual practice time during class.

ATTENTANCE/TARDY POLICY:

Please see the attendance policy for Queen Anne’s County Schools. As outlined in the KIHS student handbook, three unexcused tardies will result in an after-school detention.

GRADING POLICY:

Summative assessments—45%--class recitals, composer project, unit tests

Formative Assessments—40%--weekly playing tests, quizzes, worksheets

Final exam—15%
