Gayle Pearson’s “At the Avenue Eatery”: Literary Analysis Practice

The following sentences serve as examples for the types of sentences that should make up a literary analysis paragraph. The reference to the literary terminology is underlined, the reference to the evidence from the text is italicized (keep in mind that you may need to explain the context on the story when you introduce the text evidence), and the analysis (tell-me-why-you-said-it statement) is in bold type.

Proposed Thesis Statement:

Pearson uses personification, hyperbole, and diction to convey the tone of her short story “At the Avenue Eatery”.

Example One:

Pearson uses personification when she writes that “little yellow flames shiver inside their red candle holder”. Instead of simply stating that the candlelight “flickered”, which is a typical and expected explanation of what candles do, the author creates an image of movement in a fresh way.

Example Two:

Various uses of hyperbole scan be seen throughout the short story “At the Avenue Eatery,” help to convey a light-hearted tone. Proving how obstinate her father is, Lindsey explains how he used so much flour when making a cake that “[it] weighed about sixteen tons after baking”.

Instructions: Provide your own sentences for any of the literary terms from your double-sided journal. Be sure to include all three components that each of these examples above shows.
